Over the past few months, I’ve been on the hunt. Once a certain date in June found it’s way onto my calendar (wedding bells, anyone?!) I knew I wanted to kick my health and fitness routine into high gear. I’ve always been a pretty active person, but have never really paid attention to the specifics of my day-to-day activity. And in this effort to really up my game, I wanted something that could make that information accessible to me!

Enter my search for the perfect fitness tracker. Andrew and I looked into, debated and discussed so many options. But here’s what I kept getting stuck on… the look of these things. If I was going to wear something day in and day out, I wanted it to be a peice I loved. Something that fit into my style and didn’t scream “I WORK OUT” at everyone I passed.

So when Garmin reached out to see if I’d be interested in trying their Vivomove HR smartwatch, an incredibly chic smartwatch with a hidden display, I nearly did a backflip! Stylish? Hidden display? Smartwatch?! Literally what I had been looking for… and didn’t realize existed!

I’ve been wearing it non-stop ever since receiving it, and have received so many questions from y’all about it as you’ve seen it pop up in Instagrams and on Instagram Stories. So today, I thought it would be fun to partner with Garmin in sharing why the Vivomove HR has become a crucial component of my daily ensemble, and why I think you’re going to love this thing as much as I do!

Why I Love This Watch

In a nutshell, this beauty (and I do mean beauty) has everything I need… and nothing I don’t! I was so overwhelmed when looking into some smartwatch and fitness tracker models that had endless options, apps and features I didn’t really want or need. At the end of the day, I wasn’t looking for a full computer on my wrist, I just wanted a way to track my activity while staying up to date on important notifications!

Plus, I can and do wear it all the time. I wear it on runs, I wear it in the shower (it’s waterproof), I wear it on walks with my mom, I wear it with cute outfits, I wear it in spin class (I flip the watch face to the inside of my wrist so the display doesn’t activate and distract anyone) and I can even swim in it! And best of all, I’m not sacrificing style at any point. In fact, it comes with two bands, a grey and a pretty, deep blue, so you can switch things up depending on your mood and ensemble!

Really quick, let me run you through a few of the features the Vivomove HR displays right on your wrist.

  • tracks calories burned (resting and active)
  • tracks steps
  • tracks flights of stairs
  • tracks workouts (there’s a walking mode, a running mode, a weight mode and a cardio mode)
  • tracks heart reat
  • monitors stress levels
  • displays weather
  • displays texts, calls, emails and alerts received on your phone
  • controls music playing on your phone

All of these features are accessible with a twist of your wrist, which activates the hidden display, and a swipe of your finger, which shuffles between features. I love that I can see my burned calories at a glance, and peak at my wrist to see who has texted me while in the middle of a meeting instead of pulling out my phone. Plus, the display is incredibly chic. Simple, elegant, white… I love looking at it!

Better yet, the Vivomove HR synchs to an app that displays even more info on your phone. It tracks your sleep, provides distance and pace for walks and runs, and shows you resting calories next to active calories. Here are a few screenshots to give you a feel!

activity details

sleep details

heart rate details

I am so excited to have the help of this beautiful smartwatch as I count down the months to my wedding. It’s already inspired me to take the stairs more often (who would have thought I’d be so motivated by a goal? haha!) and seeing calories burned after my workouts has been so helpful in setting and reaching goals! I feel so much more aware of my activity on a day-to-day basis, and have been motivated to move more, especially since I spend so much time at my computer. For me, it’s been a game changer!

Y’all, I really can’t recommend the Vivomove HR enough. It fits my lifestyle perfectly, and apart from the incredible insight it offers, it’s just absolutely beautiful on.

(In fact, a friend exclaimed “Wait, is that a smartwatch?!” just the other day when she saw me activate the display. She had no idea!)

Check out more about the Vivomove HR here, and let me know if you have any questions about it in the comments below! This feels like an early Christmas present to me, and would make a perfect one for you, or someone special on your list!

Kate

I took to Instagram Stories to ask what Wedding Wednesday post you’d like to see today, and let me just say… y’all absolutely came through. There were so many fabulous ideas, in fact, that I created an excel spreadsheet to keep track of them all!

One that warmed my heart, and was requested more than a few times, was this:

“How did you know Andrew was “the one?”

So today, I’d love to invite you to grab a cup of coffee, get cozy and read along. We all know by this point that I have a knack for getting a bit long-winded!

Andrew and I walking down the aisle after our best friends got married.

How I Knew Andrew Was “The One”

Let me start off by saying this… unlike the princess movies and, if we’re being honest, most of my favorite teenage fiction novels, I never really had a distinct “moment” where I thought to myself, “It’s him!”

Realizing Andrew was “the one” was more of a process, one that seemed to happen more through a steady chain of continual “me too!”s than one big, defining moment. Know what I mean?

As I look back on it all, there are a few “me too!”s in particular that sealed the deal. I think these will give you a pretty good idea of why I’ve decided I want to spend forever with this kid!

Me Too No. 1 // Faith

Andrew likes to tease me about bringing up faith during our very first conversation. Haha! :) Ever since I was a little girl, I have hoped, prayed, dreamed and at the end of the day knew that if I was ever going to marry someone, he would share the love I have for Jesus. Someone who could encourage me in that love, remind me of it, help me grow in it, and build a life centered on it.

My parents have modeled this so well, and as I’ve seen firsthand the joy a household has when it’s built on the Lord, I’ve known this is something I want for my future marriage and family too!

When Andrew and I met, it didn’t take us long to realize that our faith was “the point” of our lives. What was different about Andrew, though, was his humility with it. The way I saw him actively love others instead of just talking about it. The way we were able to talk about what we’ve struggled with and failed at in our walks instead of pretending to have it all together.

I noticed Andrew’s relationship with Jesus was genuine and sincere. It wasn’t showy, boastful, picture perfect or something he simply talked about in certain settings. He lived it.

Maybe you totally relate, or maybe faith isn’t anywhere on your radar and I sound like a crazy person. :) But either way, this was that one, non-negotiable piece that, the more I got to know, the more I loved. And the more I loved, the more I realized I didn’t want to live without.

And let me tell y’all, being on the same page about this from the get-go has been the sweetest thing. It’s been so fun to dream, chat, plan and pray about the future because, at the end of the day, we have the same objective. There’s no wondering, hoping or fighting about something we don’t match up on. And having that steady foundation has been the easiest, clearest, most important reason why I’ve realized he’s “the one!”

Me Too No. 2 // Fun

Now let’s be real, y’all. No matter how great the guy is and no matter how “on the same page” you are faith-wise (or regarding whatever is most important to you) if it doesn’t click, if you don’t have fun together, it’s not going to work. Or at least, it never would with me!

As silly as it may sound, Andrew and I just had so much fun together from the get-go. While we are pretty different in a lot of ways, we do share the same light-hearted, goofy personality that seems to make everything a bit more entertaining. :) And as we got to know one another, I realized that we genuinely enjoyed the same things, and both loved having fun in the same ways. This “me too” brought an ease to the relationship that I haven’t really experienced before!

For example, Andrew and I are both incredibly close with our families. Our good friends who set us up joke that that’s how they knew we’d be a perfect fit… Andrew and I would always be spending time with our families on college breaks instead of with our friends! (Homebodies, unite!) We both love being at home with our people… to us, that’s a perfect night!

Another “me too”? Our love for spending time out at the ranch. Leaving the city and getting out of town has always been my very favorite way to unwind and enjoy. Turns out, Andrew’s the same way! Our happiest weekends are spent relatively in the middle of nowhere with family,  friends and slim-to-non-cell service. Just a couple of weeks ago we were laughing at the realization that if I hated “ranching it,” we would have never worked out! In fact, one of our favorite things to do together is to watch wildlife at the ranch. (Do I sound old and boring or what?) I’ll take a glass of wine and we will go sit and talk for hours as the sun goes down. Talk about my happy place!

These are just a couple of silly examples, but the list of ways we love having fun together is quite extensive. Things like cooking together, singing show tunes in the car (he’ll kill me for posting that), coffee on his parent’s front porch, watching football (Ok, I’m getting there), exploring new restaurants, fishing, going to church together, seeing new movies in theater, long walks, time with each other’s family, etc seem to always make it on our “agenda.” There are definitely ways in which we are different, and we will always have our own “things,” but it is the most simple yet biggest blessing to, by and large, have fun doing the same things. It makes spending time together so easy and so, you guessed it, fun!

Me Too No. 3 // Family

The saying goes that you don’t just marry the person, you marry the family, too! And one of the things that has me the most excited about marrying Andrew is becoming a part of his.

From what I’ve heard, it’s a pretty rare thing to genuinely both love the other’s family. That is something Andrew and I really lucked out on big time. I couldn’t adore his parents or siblings more, and from what I’ve seen and heard, he feels the same about my parents and sister! Since Andrew and I are each so close with our own families, it would be really hard to end up with someone who didn’t mesh with mine and vice versa.

The other aspect of family that resulted in a “me too” moment? How we were both raised. Our families instilled similar values and priorities in us, and this common ground has been the biggest blessing as we’ve solidified our relationship and have dreamed about starting our own.

The more I got to know and love his family, and the more I saw him do the same with mine, the more I realized how I couldn’t dream up a future family where he wasn’t in it.

Me Too No. 4 // Best Friend

I think it’s safe to say that these first three points have all been pretty objective. Almost like those “checklist” items that you write out about your future husband in 7th grade. (Anyone? Just me?) But the fourth way I “knew” slash know Andrew is “the one” is in the close friendship we’ve formed.

I used to roll my eyes every time I’d see the “I’m getting to marry my best friend!” caption, but I get it now. There’s something so special in not just being “in love” with someone, but in genuinely having them as your best friend… someone who is the same in the good times and in the bad, in the puppy love phase and the “you’re on my last nerve” moment. and who cares about you more than the optics of having a picture perfect relationship.

Andrew has become my best friend. As romantic as he can be (the kid knows how to plan a surprise, y’all), as sappy as I am, and as fun as it is to be in love and to plan a wedding, it’s that friendship that I’m looking forward to developing for a lifetime. It’s our friendship that won’t grow cold when the romance wears off, that friendship that won’t leave when it’s no longer butterflies and fun, and that friendship that, as simple as it sounds, says “I genuinely like you as a person.”

As I realized Andrew was my best friend in the world, and that friendship was the foundation of our relationship and not just butterflies, I realized he was “the one.”

Me Too No. 5 // Selflessness

Well y’all, I finished this post with four “Me Too”s that all started with an “F.” (Your girl loves a theme, what can I say.) But I’m adding this in last-minute because I couldn’t end without saying one thing.

Apart from how much fun we have together, how on-the-same-page we are in terms of faith and how much we love each other’s families, Andrew is one of the most selfless people I know. Y’all, he loves in a way that always puts himself second. And it’s not just with me, I’ve seen it in the way he loves his family and his friends as well.

Apart from any other quality I’ve ever seen in a guy, this is one that has been so obviously life-giving in our relationship. And it’s funny, because when I used to think of the qualities I’d want in a future spouse, it never really ended up on my list. (I’ll confess, that’s probably because “looks like Edward Cullen” and “is a famous country singer” were taking up too much room in my 7th grade diary.)

But noticing how selfless Andrew is has pushed me to see just how selfish I can really be. Andrew thinks of others, no matter who, before himself. And as I got to know and see that this quality is such a part of who he is, I started to realize that, selfishly, I wanted him for myself! :) Because when it comes to deciding to spend a lifetime with someone, a friend who puts other people first seems, quite simply, just about as good as it gets to me.

So y’all. There you have it! It didn’t all happen in one big, introspective moment. Realizing we were each other’s future was something that played out over time. But I will say…. I’ve never been so sure. And I am so thankful for the Lord’s timing, purpose and plan in it all along.

I remember a few years ago in the middle of a hard moment my mom saying to me “Kate, a relationship shouldn’t be constantly, endlessly hard. When it’s right, it should feel pretty easy.”

And with Andrew, it’s just easy. At the end of the day, it just fits. It works. It’s not dramatic or high/low 24/7. It’s a “you and me, no matter what” kinda feeling. As roll-your-eyes-worthy as it is to say, when you know, you know!

And here’s what I do know: The hard times will come as they do with everyone, along with plenty of moments where it certainly doesn’t feel like it’s working. But I am so excited to commit to Andrew for forever. To rejoice in the fun times, to work through the difficult, and to try to prioritize him every single day as we seek to follow the Lord as best we can.

Realizing that’s where my heart is at? That’s how I know Andrew is “the one!”

Kate

16 products i personally use and love

If you’re like me, you’re using this crazy sale weekend to get all of your Christmas shopping done. That’s why I thought it would be fun to share a few products that I personally use and love… many of them, daily!

Happy Sunday, y’all! Is anyone shopped out yet?! (Rhetorical question… the answer is “never!”) There have been so many amazing sales this weekend, most of which are still active through tomorrow!

If you’re like me, you’re using this crazy sale weekend to get all of your Christmas shopping done. That’s why I thought it would be fun to share a few products that I personally use and love… many of them, daily! So if you’re stuck on that last, hard-to-gift person, or if you’re looking for a little something to treat yo’self with, check out a few of my favorite things below!

Click right on the image to shop, and scroll below for a description of why I love and how I use each item!

  1. Monogrammed Waffle Robe // When I moved into my dorm at the University of Texas my freshman year, my mom gave my roommate and I these darling, matching pink monogrammed waffle robes. I can’t believe I’m saying this… but I still use mine to this day! (If you do the math… that’s seven years. That’s a lot of love, y’all!) These are fabulous gifts because they’re great no matter the age of the person you’re gifting. They’re also light-weight, easy to clean, and oh-so-classic!
  2. Santal 26 Candle // Now, before you look at the price tag of this candle, hear me out. A few years ago, my mother and I went on a girls trip to NYC during Christmastime! We stayed at the fabulous 1 Hotel, and fell in love with the scent. After a lot of research, we tracked down a nearly identical fragrance! Think sandalwood, cedar, vanilla, musk… it’s the most incredible, fresh-yet-soothing aroma. If you don’t believe me, just check out all of the 5-star reviews! This candle is worth it, y’all. Trust me.
  3. GloPRO Microneedling Regeneration Tool // I fell in love with this buzzed-about beauty tool after purchasing it in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale two years ago. I loved it so much that last Christmas, I gave it to my mother and sister as well! Use this a few times a week for skin that feels fresh, “refurbished,” and silky-smooth. Read about it on my blog here, and check out all of the fabulous reviews here!
  4. Slip Silk Pillowcase & Sleep Mask // Andrew bought me this Slip Silk Pillowcase for Valentine’s Day last year, and I don’t know how I’ll ever sleep on anything else! The benefits of using this are incredible… it keeps hair silky, is kind to your skin, etc. Another great gift for anyone on your list, including yourself!
  5. Riki Skinny Mirror // I’ve tried a lot of beauty mirrors in my day (my other is always throwing a new one at me since I’m blind as a bat) but quite frankly, they’ve all been too cumbersome. Too small, too oddly shaped, and the list goes on! I was sent this mirror just a couple of weeks ago, and y’all. I have truly never loved anything more! First off, the mirror is huge! I can see my entire face instead of just a small section. Plus, it’s incredibly thin and therefore super easy to pack. It has a magnetic magnified mirror if you want to get a closer look, and adjustable lighting. Believe me when I say this mirror changes the game!
  6. Ugg Slippers // Sure, there are less expensive slippers on the market, but this pair of Ugg slippers is the only one I’ve kept track of and used for five years now! Yes, five. years. This pair, in particular, has the cutest bow detailing, and is currently on sale for 33% off!
  7. My Favorite Daily Moisturizer // The older I get, the more aware I’ve become about skincare. It’s so important not just that you’re “using a moisturizer,” but one that’s actually good for your skin! Enter my favorite daily moisturizer, Colleen Rothchild’s Sheer Renewal Cream. It’s lightweight, incredibly hydrating, and has the loveliest, faintest scent. My skin drinks this stuff up, and I go through tubes constantly!
  8. Chanel Lip Color in “Merry Rose” // Y’all know I talk about this stuff all. the. time. It is truly the best lip color out there! My favorite thing is getting DMs from y’all saying you ordered it and have fallen in love, too. This would make an incredible present for a best friend, sister, sister-in-law, etc as it really does look flawless on every skin tone. If you don’t have it already, you NEED it!
  9. Key Ring // Now, friends. This is not just any key ring. This is THE KEY RING OF ALL TIME. You’ll find these colorful cuties on the arm or in the bag of just about every woman in Dallas. (Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating, but I really do see them all of the time!) They make great Christmas gifts because of the price tag. It’s hard to justify buying one for yourself! But once you have one, you realize you can’t live without it. I have owned and loved mine for 2+ years, and have since purchased one for my mother, my sister, and a couple of friends! It is one product I truly use every day, and is a lifesaver for keeping track of keys.
  10. Cozy Chic Sherpa Pullover // I have been talking about this pullover on Instagram Stories all week, because it really is that good! I don’t know how… but it somehow combines the coziest sherpa fabric with an incredibly chic, oversized look. One of you messaged me yesterday to say this about it! “Thanks for the Southern Tide pullover rec! Bought one today and ended up wearing it to the Clemson football game tonight. So warm and cozy! Also, the only Sherpa that’s not obnoxiously fluffy. I’ll be living in it. THANKS AGAIN!” It’s on sale until Monday, so order it in your regular top size ASAP!
  11. Dyson Hair Dryer // I know, I know. It’s downright painful to imagine spending this much on a hairdryer, but y’all, there’s a reason there’s so much hype around this thing! I’ve owned and used mine for two years now, and have noticed an incredible change in the health of my hear. I truly believe it’s from this! My hair dries incredibly quickly and feels smooth and full afterward. (Instead of frizzy and dry like most hair dryers made it feel!) It’s worth it!
  12. Amika Straightening Brush // I purchased this tool in an attempt to be less-damaging on my hair, and it’s now absolutely one of my favorites! It doesn’t straighten your hair like a board (like true straighteners), but rather, smooths it out while keeping your hair voluminous! If you’re looking for a fast, low-maintenance and kind-to-your-hair way to style your hair, try this thing out.
  13. My Night Cream // I suffer from dry skin, and during the wintertime, it almost gets unmanageable! (I’ve had horrible instances of my skin actually peeling y’all. So bad.) This extreme recovery cream has been a game-changer. I lather it all over my face before going to bed and wake up with smooth, supple skin in the morning. Apply this right after using your GloPRO for max impact!
  14. Monogrammed Wallet // After using a Tory Burch passport case as my wallet for 3 years, I finally upgraded to this monogrammed Barrington wallet earlier this fall! In a nutshell, I’ve loved it. The size is perfect, the zipper-closure a game-changer, and the customization options are endless! I designed mine to match my St. Anne tote, and couldn’t be happier with the set. (P.S. The Barrington site is 10-20% off this weekend based on how much you spend with the code THANKFUL.
  15. Bose Headphones // I travel quite a bit, and this summer did a lot of research on wireless headphones! I wanted a pair that was first off, comfortable. Secondly, wireless. And thirdly, not ugly! I ended up purchasing this pair, and couldn’t recommend them more. They muffle noise incredibly well, so I legit leave them on all-flight even if I’m not playing music. To see my full review of them, click here!
  16. Framed Instagram Photo // I own three of these framed Instagram photos and let me tell you. They’re truly some of my favorite possessions! The beautiful gold frame options and white matting look so expensive and nice… but they’re under $50! All you have to do is upload the Instagram photo you want, and Framebridge prints, frames and ships it to you. Seriously, such a great gift!

I always love hearing about what friends of mine use and love, so I hope this post gives you some fun inspiration for treating yourself or gifting others!

I can’t wait to be back tomorrow as we close out the craziest sale season of the year with Cyber Monday! Who’s excited?!

Love from Texas,

Kate

It’s the best shopping day of the year, and in honor of Black Friday, I thought it would be fun to share a sneak peek of one of me and Andrew’s black and white engagement portraits!

Our wedding photographer John Cain sent us a few sneak peeks from our session on Tuesday evening (which was seriously one of the most fun things I’ve ever done) and I’ve been itching to share with y’all ever since!

I can’t wait to share the full session soon (including the film images John took!) but for now, I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into our fun afternoon! (Please take a second to notice the TROUT SOCKS Andrew is wearing. Y’all.)

I’ll share all of our outfit details when I reveal the full session, but I do want to let you know that the gorgeous Alexia Maria dress in the image above is currently 30% off with the code THANKFUL4U!

Now, let’s get on to the best black friday sales! I’ve rounded up all of my favorites below, and have to say I am SO impressed with this year’s selection. Scroll below for some smile-worthy sales, and let me know what you snatch up in the comments!

coffee date no. 23

With the fire on and nothing to do (isn’t that the best feeling?) I thought it would be fun to put together a long overdue Coffee Date post! I feel like y’all are super up-to-date with my life in terms of wedding planning, but everything else? Let’s dive in below!

Happy Thanksgiving night, everyone! My family and I had quite the feast at lunch, and have been camped out on the couch ever since watching low-budget Christmas movies! (Let me just say… as much as I love a good princess drama, “Princess Switch” was not our fave. ;)

With the fire on and nothing to do (isn’t that the best feeling?) I thought it would be fun to put together a long overdue Coffee Date post! I feel like y’all are super up-to-date with my life in terms of wedding planning, but everything else? Let’s dive in below!

If this is your first time to a Coffee Date, I am so glad you’re here! You’ll find my recent Instagram posts linked below, and then a (often-times rambly) life update at the end.

The reason I put together these “Coffee Date” posts is because I love connecting with y’all in a personal, real-life way. Over the nearly five years I’ve been blogging, you all have started to feel like genuine, albeit virtual, friends. That may sound cheesy, but it’s so true! And so these posts allow me to sit down and really share what all has been going on in my life outside of Lonestar Southern. They’re a breath of fresh air to me, and I hope they are to you as well!

Grab a cup of joe and enjoy! (P.S. You can catch up on my last Coffee Date post HERE if you’d like to get all caught up!)

Now, let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?

As I’m sitting here thinking through everything that’s happened since I last updated y’all in July, I think the most obvious one is easily…

being engaged

I’ve been updating y’all weekly on wedding planning details, but I thought it would be fun to talk about the actual relationship aspect of being engaged! (If you want to read about the whole story, you can do that here.)

Engagement for us, in a nutshell? Exciting. Happy. Busy. Normal.

I don’t know if this is good or bad… but relationship-wise, being engaged hasn’t been much different than dating was! I will say, it’s so fun to finally be able to dream about future plans together, and the excitement and support from family and friends has us perpetually smiling. And duh… we are so excited about June! But in terms of Kate-and-Andrew’s day-to-day? The same, happy, normal rhythm.

Honestly, I think engagement gets a bad rap. Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve heard from people I know or people I follow how stressful, how hard and how annoying engagement is. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to be married. I can’t wait to finally live together. I can’t wait to start a life as husband and wife.

But at the same time… I really want to enjoy this special season. It’s such a short and such a rare one. Yes, there’s so much “waiting” happening right now, but I think there’s a lot of beauty in that… because it’s so rare that life gives you an “expiration date” in a season of waiting. So, instead of wishing this time away, I made the mental decision early-on to really savor it.

How exactly am I “savoring” this season of being engaged? This sounds so silly, but I’ve started making mental notes about the things I love about being single, and thanking the Lord for them!

A (laughable) example? I love falling asleep to an episode of Grey’s Anatomy every night. Favorite part of my day, hands down. But who knows how Andrew will feel about that. Ok, scratch that. I can tell you right now that that’s not going to fly with him. So each time I get in bed and turn on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy lately, I’ve been saying a little prayer of gratitude for a seemingly small part of my “single life” that I’m grateful for.

I told you, silly but fun! Bringing this element of awareness and gratitude into my day has been so helpful in keeping me content and present in the here and now. And something fun to try whether you’re single or in a relationship! I dare you to try it and see how it affects your mentality!

being busy

Now onto life in general! Whenever summer rolls to an end and school starts up, I always take a sigh of relief. Summer always feel so busy and all-over-the-place, but fall promises structure! Routine! A fresh start! I typically adore the steady rythm of autumn, but this year, a happy event (hello operation plan a wedding) threw quite the wrench into that.

Like I said above, engagement has been so fun thus far. And thankfully, not stressful! But it has been busy. And between my normal workday, personal life, and all of the tasks (and emails… oy!) that go into wedding planning, I definitely haven’t felt as on top of my game!

The holidays have only added to that wonderful craziness, and to be quite honest, I’ve noticed that the most important things in my day-to-day life (i.e. spending time with the lord, working out, touching base with friends) have been the first to get pushed to the side.

So I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the bible study I joined this year (Community Bible Study) is going through the book of Daniel…

being devoted

If you’re thinking “Daniel… the guy that got thrown into the lions den?” then you’re thinking exactly what I did walking in on the first day. If we’re being honest, my knowledge of Daniel max’d out at the lion’s den children’s story.

But, as He always does, the Lord has used this book to open my eyes to the importance of staying rooted in and connected to Him.

As I read through the book of Daniel, I noticed a common theme. Daniel prayed. The dude prayed a lot. In fact, he prayed 3 times a day, consistently. No matter what. No matter how busy he was, how illegal praying became, or how many people thought ill of him for it, he spent consistent time with the Lord. And the Lord blessed Daniel through this! He used him in some unreal ways that truly blew my mind as I read through the multiple stories.

You know what was eye-opening? When I compared my own daily life with Daniels. Like Daniel, I truly love spending time with the Lord reading His word. But unlike Daniel, if I’m being honest, I don’t always prioritize that special time above all else. Over the past few weeks in particular, I’ve let wedding planning and work and countless other inferior things become my priority.

Here’s the sneaky thing… if you were to ask me, I’d say my walk with the Lord is my number one priority. But if you looked at where I spent my time in these past few months, you might be confused.

I think the Lord knew exactly what He was doing when He led me to the book of Daniel this fall. And as I’m writing this out, I’m hearing Him remind me of the joy that is found in daily anchoring my life on Him.

So, as we head into the holiday season, and as I head into the remaining months befote marriage, I am praying it’s marked by my devotion to the Lord. Not how many blog posts I got up, how many spin classes I attended, or how many items I checked off of my wedding planning checklist. Those things aren’t going to matter 10 years from now, but I know the One thing that is.

For an amazing visual representation on this, check out this video at 42:05. The whole message is awesome and is specifically about dating, but this last bit in particular totally resonated with me in terms of the power of prioritizing your walk with the Lord. Tell me you’re not hyped up after watching it! :)

highs and lows

I decided to introduce “highs and lows’ in my last Coffee Date, and if you missed it, it’s basically a way my community group checks in to celebrate the good and pray through the hard in each of our lives whenever we meet. Here are mine since we last touched base!

Lows

  • Making a wedding guest list
    • By far and large, coming up with a wedding guest list has been the most difficult part of wedding planning thus far! I always heard this was a difficult process, but never really understood until I sat down to do it myself. Let’s just say it’s no fun, and I hate the thought of hurting any feelings. Ugh!
  • Not keeping my priorities a priority
    • This is exactly what I talked about above. The feeling of letting my to-do list become more important than the things in my life that truly matter is so unsettling, and I’m ready to flip that around these next few weeks
  • Living logistics
    • My lease is ending at the end of January, and I’m currently deciding what on earth to do! Go month to month until June? Move in with my parents? I haven’t shared with y’all what Andrew and I are doing in terms of living arrangements quite yet, but it will involve saying goodbye to the little apartment complex I’ve lived in since graduation. I’m so excited for the change, but figuring it out during Christmas and New Years isn’t ideal timing.

Highs

  • Wedding bands
    • A few weeks ago, Andrew surprised me by taking me to pick out our wedding bands! It was so fun seeing him with a gold ring on his finger. We got everything ordered, and I can’t wait to see how they turn out!
  • Ranch weekends
    • This fall, Andrew and I have gotten to spend lots of time with friends and family out at his family ranch. There’s no place I love more than being out on a ranch… there’s something about the Texas countryside that calms me down more than anywhere else. Having the time to unplug from work and be with people I love has been the best!
  • Dreaming big
    • One unexpected and huge blessing that has come about in terms of wedding planning? Some amazing opportunities surrounding the event! There are a couple of things in the works in particular that I am giddy about sharing with y’all. Stay tuned!
  • Holiday cheer
    • ‘Tis the season, and as busy and hectic as it can get, there’s nothing like Christmas time! I’m so excited to shop all the best black friday sales from bed tomorrow. Be sure to check back first thing. I’ll have a guide up to all of my favorites!

things i’m loving

Whew, y’all know me. I always somehow get on a soapbox when I start writing these Coffee Date posts! I think it’s because as I take the time to pause and reflect on my life, I can see more clearly what the Lord has been doing in it. Now that we’ve waded through the more personal, heavier life updates, let’s move on to a few things I’ve become obsessed with these past few months!

  • avocado toast with this seasoning // I only recently started enjoying avocados, y’all. I know it sounds like blasphemy, but it’s true! However, in an effort to find healthy breakfast items, I decided to give avocado toast a try. I am now hooked, and finally understand the hype!
  • madam secretary // I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve literally caught up to the present-day season of Grey’s Anatomy! Now, my nightly routine has started to involve an episode of Madam Secretary instead. (Although I think I’ll be switching to hallmark Christmas movies for the next few weeks!)
  • this cute smartwatch // Andrew and I have been talking about getting smart watches or fit bits for Christmas, but I couldn’t get on board with the look of any I found. (I’ve always been super particular about jewelry and accessories!) But a few weeks ago, I got an exciting email from Garmin asking if I would try their vivomove HR, and I am obsessed! It looks like a regular, gorgeous watch, but has all the amazing features you could want. I’m hooked, and will share more soon!
  • sacred marriage // Andrew’s precious grandparents gifted us this book as an engagement gift, and I have found it so insightful. I’m about a quarter of the way in, and have learned so much. (Not to mention I’ve highlighted like 75% of it, haha!) If you’re looking for some great marriage wisdom, check it out!
  • panic! at the disco // No joke, I’ve been going through a major panic! at the disco phase. The song “high hopes” has been in my head for like two weeks straight, y’all! What is going on!
  • pure barre // Read all about my pure barre update here.
  • walks with my mama // Another “single life” privilege I have become so grateful for? Morning walks with my mom! Over the past few weeks, I’ve started joining her for morning walks around the neighborhood with my parent’s dog Ernie. I love getting to start my day this way, and know it’s something I’ll look back on and miss when she’s not two blocks away!

IN A NUTSHELL

It’s a fun, exciting, busy season for me, and in all of the hustle and bustle, it’s been eye-opening to see what I view as “most important” on a day to day basis. Do you ever have these moments? Where you look up and think, “Man, I need to step back and refocus.” That’s where I’m at right now, and I love holding onto the truth of this verse:

“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

I’m looking forward to recentering, reprioritizing and seeking after what is most important with all of my heart these next few months as I head into a new year and a brand new season of life!

As always, I am so immensely grateful that I get to walk through, blog about, and process life with you. It is a special blessing to be able to share more than photos and outfits with you, and I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate you taking the time to “catch up” with me tonight! :)

Happy Thanksgiving, friends. How can I ever express my gratitude for y’all! Wherever you’re at in life, I’m praying that you’re able to savor the sweet in it, however small or big, and that you’re taking the time to prioritize what is most important to you!

Love from Texas,

Kate
