our weekend in savannah // weekend travel guide

This past weekend, Andrew and I took our first trip just the two of us! We’d honeymooned, yes, and headed to California for a wedding, but this was the first time we got out of town to do something just for fun. And it was a blast!

The Alida Hotel, a small, luxury hotel in Savannah, Georgia, reached out with an invitation for the weekend. (So keep in mind, this trip was complimentary. Obviously my opinions are my own!) So on Friday night, once Andrew got off of work, we packed up the car and made the 3.5 hour drive to Savannah.

Neither of us had been to this beautiful, historic city before, and we were excited to see what it was all about. The Alida team provided us with some amazing recommendations, and y’all came in in a huge way with some fabulous tips as well! Today, I’m so excited to share with you what we did, along with all of the fun recommendations you sent in that we didn’t have time for.

Friday Night

JACKET | SHOES (go up half a size!) | WHITE TEE | WATCH (Kate Spade, not online yet!) | PEARL STUDS

12:30 pm // Made it to Savannah! We checked into The Alida and were instantly wow’d by the beautiful aesthetic. (Check out the website to see what I mean!) The hotel receptionist handed us two refillable waterbottles and let us know there was a water station on each floor… loved that little detail!

Our room was beautiful, y’all. We stayed in a Corner Suite and loved how spacious, crisp and gorgeous the look was. We’d hoped to make it to the downstairs restaurant, The Rhett, in time for drinks and dessert, but since it was past midnight we decided to call it a night and wake up early to enjoy a full Saturday in Savannah!

Saturday Morning

DRESS | SHOES | SUNGLASSES | BAG

10:45 am // After letting ourselves sleep in (such a luxury these days!) we got up and headed out to by far the most recommended brunch spot y’all sent in… Collins Quarter! Oh. My. Goodness. It was to-die-for!

Along the way, we walked down Broughton Street, which many of you had recommended. So many adorable shops! (We found The Alida to be located perfectly around all the spots we wanted to visit, this street included!) Our favorite was The Paris Market. We were hungry for brunch so didn’t stay long, but made a mental note to return Sunday morning!

There was about a 45-minute wait, so we grabbed a couple of bloody marys and walked around the adorable neighborhood. Brunch itself was well worth it. I had french toast straight from heaven above, and Andrew had a delicious eggs benedict!

Fabulous service, atmosphere and food. 10/10 recommend!

Saturday Afternoon

1:00 pm // After we were completely stuffed, we managed to waddle on over to the Old Town Trolley Tour outpost and jump on a trolley! The Alida team, along with many of you, had recommended this as a great way to see Savannah. It’s hop-on, hop-off, and Andrew and I really enjoyed the flexibility it offered while allowing us to see the beautiful city. Highly recommend!

1:45 pm // It suddenly occurred to me that a shop I’ve dreamed of visiting for years now, Emily McCarthy, is located in Savannah! I convinced Andrew to jump off the trolley and head there with me.

It ended up being a little too far off of the trolley trail to make it convenient (we ended up calling an uber a few minutes into the trek) but I had so much fun visiting the adorable boutique. For some reason, I had packed sweater dresses for dinner and realized I was going to need something a bit lighter… I ended up gabbing the cutest dress (on sale!) and bangles there!

3:00 pm // At this point in the afternoon, we were exhausted from all of the sightseeing and shopping. (Word to the wise, it’s HOT in Savannah!) I would have loved to do some more exploring, but since we were really looking forward to pre-dinner drinks on the rooftop of The Alida, we decided to head back to our room to rest and freshen up before the evening.

Saturday Evening

DRESS | BANGLES | EARRINGS

6:00 pm // After a couple of hours of downtime, we headed upstairs to the rooftop bar at The Alida… The Lost Square! I truly can’t tell you how much we enjoyed it. The design was stunning and afforded great views of the water and the city. String lights, soft music, and best yet, not overly-crowded! We were able to find two cozy chairs easily.

We ordered drinks and an appetizer (ask for the fried cauliflower… it’s technically not on the Lost Square menu but they will make it for you and it’s drool-worthy!) and took in the views as the sunset. It was a perfect way to head into the night, and was probably my favorite moment of the trip!

7:30 pm // A two minute Uber ride took us to Husk, where we had a dinner reservation awaiting us. This was another spot that had been recommended by y’all! Wow.. talk about a beautiful building! The restaurant is housed in a stunning historic home. When we walked up into the main dining area, which used to be a ballroom, we made an audible “oh my gosh!

It was definitely a leisurely, slow-paced meal. We had the coziest tucked-away booth, and enjoyed looking through the inventive menu, which changes daily! Such a cool culinary experience.

10:00 pm // Finally, we made it back to our room! We would’ve loved to go out on the town, but again we found ourselves completely exhausted! Ordering room service dessert (still dreaming about that brownie and ice cream) and falling asleep to an action movie was just what the doctor ordered.

Sunday Morning

SCARF | SHOES (go up half a size!) | WHITE TEE | WATCH (Kate Spade, not online yet!) | PEARL STUDS | SUNGLASSES | BAG

11:00 am // After another full night’s sleep, we packed up our bags, checked out of The Alida and ventured out into the city for one final meal. (Because if there’s one thing we prioritized this trip… it was eating! :)

This time, we decided to stop into The Paris Market and grab an “appetizer” of lattes and macaroons. The staff was SO sweet and the entire experience absolutely darling, from the sidewalk tables that looked straight out of Paris to the delicious pastries!

We decided to check out another highly-recommended spot by y’all, Little Duck Diner! Let’s just say they’ve got the adorable, instagrammable, and completely delicious trifecta down. I couldn’t stop snapping photos!

The food was also amazing. It had southern classics as well as Asian-inspired dishes, and I absolutely devoured my Grilled Salmon bowl. The drinks were also fab! Andrew’s bloody mary came with a rubber ducky, which he quickly let me place in my mimosa instead. :)

After a full, sunny Sunday morning, we reluctantly got into our car and hit the road back to Gainesville. It was a perfect weekend, and we loved every second of our stay in Savannah! We fell in love with this active, historic city and hope to visit again soon. One weekend is not enough!

how to throw an easy & adorable fall tailgate

Hosting new friends at our home here in Gainesville, Florida has become one of our very favorite things. We’ve done game nights, make-your-own-pizza get-togethers, but my favorite this fall is a good old fashioned tailgate at home.

When I married Andrew, I knew some things were going to have to change in regards to my own personal life… mainly, my fervor (or lack-there-of) for football. Let’s just say as one of two girls, Saturdays were spent at the mall rather than watching a game. (God bless my kind, patient father.) Can you blame me?!

This season, Andrew has been patiently teaching me all of the terms, player info and lingo. Little by little, I’m getting there!

And while I’m still a ways away from being a die-hard fan, there is one aspect of football I’m already head-over-heels for… tailgating!

Hosting new friends at our home here in Gainesville, Florida has become one of our very favorite things. We’ve done game nights, make-your-own-pizza get-togethers, but my favorite this fall is a good old fashioned tailgate at home.

Today, I’m excited to share our fall tailgate essentials… and you may not believe it, but every single thing is from Walmart! With free next-day delivery on eligible orders over $35 and prices that leave room in the budget for other autumn fun, Walmart has become my one-stop-shop for all party essentials… from game-time food and snacks to serveware, kitchen appliances, home entertainment and more!

at-home tailgate essentials

Let’s start with an easy tailgate hack! To keep setup easy and quick, designate one space to house all your tailgating goods, and have fun with it!

I created a tailgating station using this adorable gold bar cart, which is under $150! I love that you can switch up the theme based on the time of year. To play up the fall football theme, I added this cute $5 football banner and some adorable $6 “eat drink football” plates.

I also found tons of cute fall decor while running in to my local Walmart for snacks, like these $7 hay bales. (This mini hay bale I used on the top shelf is just $3!) The faux pumpkin arrangement made for the cutest pop of fall color. I grabbed it in-store, and am looking for it online now. I’ll keep y’all updated!

Now let’s get to the main event… snacks! I like to keep things easy and enjoyable for everyone by bringing in a few childhood favorites. Who can say no to cheeseballs, pretzels, popcorn, chips & salsa and candy?

The only thing I home make is my favorite Saltine Toffee because it’s so easy and something everyone enjoys. I’ve slightly adapted this recipe, and it’s divine. Here’s how to make it!

Saltine Toffee

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F

Line cookie sheet with saltine crackers in a single layer.

Place the sugar and butter in a saucepan. Without stirring, bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes.

Immediately pour over saltines and spread to cover crackers completely.

Bake at 400 degrees F for 5 to 6 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes. Spread melted chocolate and top with sea salt and chopped nuts. Cool completely and break into pieces.

Warning… be sure you have plenty of people over to enjoy this stuff with. If not, you may wind up eating the entire pan by yourself! (Not that I’ve done that or anything…)

Fall tailgates are such a fun way to entertain, and thanks to Walmart, they don’t have to be a huge production! I know I’m so looking forward to continuing this tradition this season as I gradually figure out football. :) Would love to know all of your tailgate favorites!

Kate

one sweater, three ways

Out of the many reasons why I love fall fashion, the ability to mix and match neutral pieces to create fresh yet timeless looks is one of my very favorites!

Out of the many reasons why I love fall fashion, the ability to mix and match neutral pieces to create fresh yet timeless looks is one of my very favorites!

Over time, I’ve learned that when it’s all said and done, you really only need a few staple pieces to create an effortlessly elegant autumn wardrobe. A perfectly-fitting pair of jeans. Some beautiful boots. A classic, versatile bag. And the piece I’m so excited to share with you today… a cozy, classic sweater!

One of my go-to destinations for fall fashion has always been and will always be Nordstrom. They always have a fabulous selection of on-trend pieces in their Topshop & Trend department, and with free shipping & free returns, I never have to worry about fit! (Especially now that I don’t live near a storefront.)

This Topshop sweater is one of my favorite finds thus far, and I’m excited to share three different ways to style it in partnership with Nordstrom today. (Heads up, I’m wearing a size Small Petite, which is my normal size in petite!) Check them out, and don’t forget to vote for your favorite below!

It doesn’t get more effortless than throwing on a cozy sweater with a pair of jeans, some leopard flats, and running out the door to take on the day!

This sweater is unbelievably soft (I can’t stand anything scratchy!) and has a perfect fit. The cropped silhouette makes it easy to tuck into high waisted jeans (this pair is unbelievably flattering!) without looking too bulky!

out and about

SWEATER (wearing size small petite) | JEANS | BOOTS | BAG | HEADBAND (sold out, similar style linked) | EARRINGS (sold out, similar look here)

Who says you can’t look sassy in a sweater? Dress this piece up with some fabulous suede boots, a chic little black bag and my favorite seasonal accessory, a velvet headband, for a look Blair Waldorf would approve of.

Tucking not your thing? This sweater looks adorably untucked as well!

prim and proper

SWEATER (wearing size small petite) | SKIRT | SHOES | BAG | EARRINGS (sold out, similar look here)

A great cream sweater works well in any context, including more professional settings. With a sweet little skirt and some suede pumps, take this ensemble straight from the office to happy hour!

To dress this ensemble down, swap out the heels for a pair of booties or riding boots. (This pair I’ve been eyeing is on sale!)

A great sweater can take you through all of fall. The cropped style is so in the season, and I’m loving how easy and non-clunky it makes styling! This one is selling out quickly, but here are a few other amazing cropped sweaters I’m loving as well:

Now, I’d love to know… which fall look is your favorite?!

my everyday planner + discount code!

One of the most frequent questions I get is where on earth my planner is from. If you haven’t been introduced to Sweet Caroline Designs, y’all, you’re in for quite the treat!

One of the most frequent questions I get is where on earth my planner is from. If you haven’t been introduced to Sweet Caroline Designs, y’all, you’re in for quite the treat!

I love a large, clean, organized planner. Even though they can be so cute, I don’t need itemized lists, quotes, or any “extras.” Over time, I’ve learned those additions can quickly overwhelm when looking at a busy week!

That’s why I became an instant fan when I came across the large Sweet Caroline Designs 17 month planner. (There’s also a smaller size if you don’t carry a Mary Poppins bag like I do!)

The size is perfect for all of my checklists, notes and lists. The layout is clean and simple. The note pages are plentiful. And perhaps best of all, the monthly designs are so adorable, cheerful and southern. Honestly, what’s not to love?!

Whenever I use it, it puts a smile on my face. Any way to add a bit of joy into my day is an automatic win – this planner does just that!

So scroll below to see the planner I picked out for this year, along with an amazing discount code just for Lonestar Southern followers!

Let’s take a look inside, shall we?! Here are a few of my favorite features. Not pictured is the pocket attached to the inside cover. I put so many pamphlets, business cards and receipts in there!

monthly view // weekly view

Each month is equipped with one full calendar, and then weekly segments divided into two pages. I love how clean and easy to navigate it is. I draw a line through each day on the monthly overview, and draw my own checkboxes to cross off as I complete daily tasks.

favorite months

Whenever I get a new Sweet Caroline Designs planner, I immediately flip through the monthly art. Each of the designs is adorable. (My favorite, the blue chinoiserie collage, is on my birthday month. Yippee!) Once I move on to a new planner, I cut these out and use them on bulletin boards and such.

sticker page

Oh yes I DID just say sticker page! And are these not to die for?! The only problem is they’re so cute that I hate to actually use them! Goal for this next month… actually use some stickers! :)

I’m head over heels for the Sweet Caroline Designs planner, and am so happy to share this little piece of my day with you! That’s not the only thing I’m sharing today… how does a DISCOUNT CODE and GIVEAWAY sound?!

five favorite things // my stay at the hilton sandestin

Just a few weeks ago, I got my final fill of summer sunshine in on a quick trip to the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. The team was kind enough to invite me to the beautiful property, and since it’s only a 4 hour drive from Gainesville, I hit the road for a few days of sun and sand!

Today, I thought it would be fun to walk you through my five favorite parts of the miniature vacation. So many of y’all sent in comments about your love for the property, and I quickly understood why!

1. my spacious, modern room

I felt completely spoiled in a King Bed Beachview room. Not only was it so incredibly spacious and well-decorated (my favorite hotel aesthetic, and something rare to come by in beachfront hotels) but there was also an adorable set of bunk beds near the front of the room. If Andrew had been with me, I’m 100% confident he would have insisted on sleeping in them. Plenty of space for a family!

2. beachfront activities

One of the wonderful things about the Hilton Sandestin is that it has its own private beachfront. They do a great job of offering lots of different ways to enjoy it, and here are a few of my favorites:

Umbrella Rentals

The bright yellow umbrellas put such a smile on my face and are available to rent. My insider tip? Call the hotel right when you make your reservations and ask to reserve a spot on the front row. They’re given first-come-first-serve, and are a game-changer especially during busy seasons!

BIKINI TOP | SUNGLASSES | SARONG

SUNGLASSES

Beach Bonfire

One of my favorite moments of the trip was the nighttime beach bonfire. The Hilton Sandestin team set up an amazing fire complete with music and smores. We spent a few hours out there snacking, chatting and taking in the beautiful night. This would be such a great idea for a group of families or friends to do together!

Fitness Class

The first morning of our trip, I got up early for a fitness class on the beach. To be honest, I was not really looking forward to the 6am wakeup call, but ended up having the best morning. The fitness instructor took us on a long walk along the beach where we alternated between squats, lunges, arm circles and a few other low-impact exercises. It was such a pleasant way to wake up and get some movement in while enjoying the view and the cool morning!

3. delicious dining

I’ve spent quite a bit of time on 30A, specifically over in the Seaside/Watercolor area, and meals are always a highlight for me. :) This was my first time in Sandestin, and I was really impressed with the fact with how expansive the dining options were at the Hilton Sandestin.

The breakfast buffet at Sandcastles was huge, and I was pleasantly surprised by the Hadashi Sushi Bar near the lobby of the hotel! My very favorite meal, however, was our final dinner at Seagar’s. Oh my goodness. It had a gorgeous, dark and romantic atmosphere complete with a pianist and wine room. If you have ever been to Houston’s, that’s the vibe it gave me!

4. spa day!

I absolutely loved my experience at the Serenity by the Sea Spa. What a treat! In all the times I’ve visited the beach, it’s been rare to have a gorgeous spa within walking distance! I got to my appointment about a half-hour early to enjoy the whirlpool before my amazing massage. When my masseuse asked how it was, I responded “life-changing”… so I think that’s a good sign! :)

5. shopping

Needing a break from the sun, we decided to head over to the Grand Boulevard for lunch, shopping and a stop at the Shard Shop! What a fun way to spend the afternoon. I can’t recommend Vintij, our lunch spot, enough! Such a darling ambiance along with some amazing, beautiful dishes. I had so much fun getting my creative juices flowing by making a rendition of our wedding monogram at the Shard Shop. This adorable area is just a few minutes drive from the Hilton Sandestin!

DRESS | WEDGES | HEADBAND | BAG (sold out)

All in all, it was a wonderful few days away soaking up the tail end of summer at the Hilton Sandestin! If I could change one thing, it would be that Andrew had been there to experience it with me. I know he would have loved it!

Here are a few other photos and outfit details from the trip.
