One of the questions I get asked the most? “Where did you get your gold gallery wall frames from?”

When I first moved into my very own place, this gold gallery wall was one of the first things I put together. I wanted something that made a big design impact, but also felt personal and sophisticated. These chic gold frames filled with my favorite memories created just the look and feel I was going for!

Best yet, unlike a piece of art, you can make this gallery wall fit any feel you’re going for by simply switching out the photos! I recently switched out the photos I initially filled these frames with with more recent memories in a sepia, vintage tone. I love it!

First, let’s start out with specifications on the exact materials I purchased to create this wall. Then, I’ll walk you through the steps I followed below.

Materials

  • 12 Gold Frames // purchase HERE

I chose the size 16″ x 16″ with the option “Clear Acrylic & Foamcore Backing.” One day, I’d love to replace the acrylic with real glass.

  • 12 Mattboards // purchase HERE

I chose the size 16″ x 16″ with a 3 3/4″ x 3 3/4″ opening size. View the screenshot below for further specifications. (I chose all of the cheapest options.)

  • 12 Square Photos // print 4″ x 4″

How To Create Your Gold Gallery Wall

  • Measure Your Space

Before ordering any frames, measure your space. The dimensions of my gold frames, which you can buy HERE, are 16″ x 16″. I think this is a great size for making an impact, but depending on your space you may want to do a square of 3 frames by 3 frames instead of my wider 3 frames by 4 frames layout.

  • Order Frames

Once you’ve decided on how many frames you want to create your gallery wall with, go ahead and order your frames here. Scroll above to “Materials” to see the exact dimensions I ordered.

  • Order Matting

Keep in mind that the gold frames do NOT come with matting. Those must be ordered separately. I used this website. Scroll above to “Materials” to see the exact dimensions I ordered for my matting.

  • Print Photos

Now is the fun part… choosing the photos! Before printing away, think through the color scheme you’d like your gallery wall to create. Do you want bright colors or more muted tones? Black and white? All landscapes or portraits? A mixture of both? All of these details are important in creating the exact look you want.

In my first apartment, I chose photos that captured some of my favorite memories and people, making sure to use photos with bright colors. For my new apartment, I switched to sepia and black & white toned photos. It creates a totally different look, which I love!

  • Assemble Frames

One thing to note is that these gold frames do not come assembled. (The price you pay for… a good price! ;) It took me a good bit of time to assemble all twelve of my frames, but was well worth it in the end!

I quickly realized it’s super important to set the wire hangers at the same spot on each frame for continuity’s sake. Also, be sure to use the same length of wire for each frame. This ensures each frame hangs the same on the wall. If you don’t do this, it will be nearly impossible to create an orderly gallery wall.

  • Measure Out Wall

I’m all about “eyeballing” it when it comes to hanging decor, but this gallery wall is not something I’d recommend doing that for. One thing that helped me plan my wall out was to cut newspaper into the sizes of the frames and taped them up on my wall. This allowed me to make sure every frame was lined up perfectly before nailing in any holes!

If you look closely, you’ll see my tape measure that I used for measuring on the couch. :)

  • Lay Out Photos

Once you have your gallery wall measured out, it’s time to plan the order of your photos. Again, this is a detail you may not thinik about at first, bit it’s important for getting a cohesive look to your gallery wall! I laid out my photos on the floor right in front of the wall and played around with the order until I found a color scheme and flow that I loved.

  • Hang Frames

Finally, it’s time to hang your frames! I learned that a bit of trial and error is to be expected, even with the newspaper layout method I used. Luckily, you only need small nails to hang these frames since they’re fairly lightweight and the holes they create aren’t too big.

There you have it, friends! I wish I could tell you the exact cost… I honestly can’t remember! I do know it ended up being around $450 or so for all of the materials which ended up coming out to about $38 a frame, everything included. While this was definitely a pricey investment for a girl just starting out, I can honestly say I haven’t regretted the purchase for one second. It was just what I needed to fill the blank space above my couch, and I’ve used them in every place I’ve lived thus far! I also love that later on, depending on where I live, I can mix around the number and order of these frames to hang in different parts of a house.

I’d absolutely love to hear your thoughts on this gallery wall, and if you have any questions leave them below!

Also, don’t forget to check out this living room tour from my previous apartment for more details on my decor! I’ll be updating y’all with my new apartment soon.

Love from Texas,

Kate

P.S. I always get questions about my pink rug, and just found that it’s back in stock AND on sale HERE! I had the hardest time finding a cute pink rug two years ago when I got my first apartment, but now there are SO many cute ones on the market. See some of my favorites below!

morning coffee in carmel

Jaw dropping. I really don’t know how else to describe it. The weekend took place at the impeccable Stonepine Estate, and it’s safe to say I never wanted to leave.

stonepine estate carmel

SWEATER   white sweater (available in more colors here, wearing size XS)   |   JEANS   j.crew jeans (true to size, I hemmed mine)   |   BOOTIES   suede booties   |   RING   del brenna ring   |   LIP COLOR   chanel gloss (wearing color darling pink)

This past Thursday, I flew out to begin yet another friend’s wedding festivities (I love this season!!) in Carmel, California.

Friends.

Jaw. Dropping.

I really don’t know how else to describe it. The weekend took place at the impeccable Stonepine Estate (click here to see the estate), and it’s safe to say I never wanted to leave.

One of my favorite moments of the trip was waking early to enjoy coffee out in the cool serene of the back veranda. The mornings and evenings had the loveliest chill to them, and I felt so cozy in this sudsy sweater and my favorite booties. Y’all… this sweater is genuinely the softest thing I’ve ever worn. Click here to see a close-up of the fabric… it’s to die for! It was the perfect way to sneak away before all of the excitement began!

The wifi was spotty (actually, pretty non-existent) all weekend, which gave me a chance to unplug and be present. I always appreciate those forced moments! I did manage to grab quite a few photos, however, and can’t wait to share more with y’all this week!

The 95 degree Dallas weather I’m greeted with today just doesn’t feel the same. :)

Love from Texas,

Kate

my new jeans + a new video

One of my best friends since childhood is getting married this weekend in Carmel, and I am lucky enough to be a bridesmaid. The girls are flying in today for a pre=bachelorette party before the festivities commence! I have only been to California once, and it was over five years ago, so needless to say I am excited!

Good morning from many, many thousands of feet above, y’all! I have been so busy lately that I haven’t mentioned this much… but I am currently in-flight to San Fransisco, California!

One of my best friends since childhood is getting married this weekend in Carmel, and I am lucky enough to be a bridesmaid. The girls are flying in today for a pre=bachelorette party before the festivities commence! I have only been to California once, and it was over five years ago, so needless to say I am excited!

One of the many things I’m looking forward to about this trip is the weather. I’m finally going to get a break from the Texas heat, and I plan on taking full advantage of it! In true procrastinator-preparation last night, I did something I rarely do anymore… I took a trip to the mall! (I’ve become such an online shopper the hassle of the mall never seems worth it anymore, haha!)

I had so much fun trying on styles I wouldn’t normally go for… and I don’t know if it’s the Cali vibes I’m already feeling or my obsession with Mamma Mia, but I wound up in the most fun, crazy pair of jeans I’ve ever tried on.

And. I. Love. Them.

JEANS   free people flare jeans (true to size, under $100)   |   TOP   madewell central blouse (wearing size XS)   |   SHOES   suede heeled sandals   |   CLUTCH   suede tassel clutch (comes in lots of other cute colors)

I’ve always been a fan of flares, really because I find them so fun and so flattering. This pair takes all of those qualities to another level! The fit is so elongating (I love that the flare starts right at the top of the knee instead of halfway through it) and they are mega comfortable. Plus, they’re under $100 and come in lots of different colors!

I picked up a few more items, like this chic white blouse and these heeled sandals I’m so excited for. Plus, check out this suede clutch I snagged for right under $50. It’s the perfect fall accessory, and I’m wanting it in pink and black, too!

I plan on sharing lots of pics from this weekend, so be sure to follow along on Instagram. Perhaps I’ll even do a “What I Wore This Weekend” post if y’all want to see it? Let me know in the comments below!

Wishing everyone a fabulous Thursday. The weekend starts for me right now… cheers!

Love from somewhere above the mid-west,

Kate

lights, camera…

one dress, two colors // which is your fave?

It’s no secret that, more than any other piece of clothing, dresses are my absolute favorite to style. When it comes to those I can wear in fall and winter, I can’t seem to get enough! Today, I’m so excited to share you one style that comes in two colorways, both of which I’m already excited to break out in the coming weeks!

BLACK DRESS   black sleeveless print dress (wearing size XS)   |   RED DRESS   red sleeveless print dress (wearing size XS)   |   HEELS   black block heels (similar linked)   |   BOOTS   suede over the knee boots (similar linked)   |   EARRINGS   white floral earrings (similar linked)   |   EARRINGS   gold hoops (similar linked)   |   BRACELETS   bracelet set   |   CLUTCH   tan envelope clutch (similar linked)

Let’s talk about fall down south, y’all. While I do wish we’d get actual cold weather now and then, the mild climate means we can wear dresses well into autumn. Because of that, you won’t hear me complaining!

This sleeveless tiered dress from Belk has an effortless feel to it, with plenty of feminine details to boot. I love the high neck, the lace detailing, the pattern blocking, and maybe most of all… how light it is to wear!

It’s the perfect style for fall and it offers so many different ways of wearing it. Some simple block heels would look gorgeous for a more formal occasion, and over the knee boots are always a go-to when things start to get chilly. A pair of pretty ballet flats would make for a practical, classic ensemble. Best yet, pair it with a denim or moto jacket to change up the look even more!

It’s clear the options are endless with this little fall frock, which is perfectly priced at under $30. Now one question remains… which color would you pick? Red? Black? Both?

Love from Texas,

Kate

10 college dorm essentials

I made it to my freshman year dorm in one piece, but over that year learned what was really made dorm life easier, and what really didn’t. So when Walmart reached out to see if I’d be interested in sharing my back-to-college essentials, I couldn’t wait to put my tips to paper! (Or keyboard, that is.)

It feels like just yesterday… the frantic scurry around town to find everything I needed for my move to Austin, Texas for my freshman year at the University of Texas. I remember racing from store to store with my mom, hoping I had everything I needed for this huge life transition! (Like, how many personal trashcans is sensible?! Do I need one 5-subject notebook or five 1-subject notebooks?!)

I spent some time brainstorming the items that made my freshman year better and am so excited to share them with you today! Especially because I get lots of emails from you college-aged ladies, and know this applies to quite a few of you!

One tip to know straight away… Walmart offers free two day shipping on most orders of $35 or more. Take it from me, not having to run around like a crazed person trying to track everything down is key. Take a look for yourself on the college landing page… so much back-to-school inspiration!

Now, let’s get started!

1. Full-Size Duvet Cover

This tip actually came straight from my mama! When you’re selecting your freshman-year bedding, odds are you’re looking for something for a twin-sized bed. Instead of choosing the twin size, however, opt up for the full size! This makes your bed look extra cozy and plush, and adds an instant “homey” feeling to your dorm room.

This aqua duvet cover actually looks just like the one I had (and loved!) freshman year! (See photo below.)

Another tip… stay away from all-white bedding. While I love the clean, crisp look, it doesn’t hold up to college wear and tear! A nice, soothing color like this is much easier to keep clean.

2. Keurig Coffee Maker

My caffeine addiction hasn’t always been a thing. No, it started… you guessed it… my freshman year of college. Take it from me, sometimes a little caffeine is just what you need for those 8ams, and having a small Keurig like this one tucked away in your room saves you the trip to the cafeteria and saves you money from countless Starbucks runs!

3. Shower Cap

As silly as this may seem, I think my shower cap was my most-prized possession during my freshman year of college. Who has time to wash their hair every day when you’re juggling a new school, schedule and social life all at once! Put the days of dancing around the shower in a messy bun behind you and buy a shower cap. It’s trés fashionable, $3, and you can thank me later.

4. Surge Protector

Let me make a blanket statement right off the bat. No matter where you live your freshman year, you will not have enough plugs. Between your computer charger, your phone charger, your hair dryer, your straightener, your speakers, your lamps, your TV and the countless other items you manage to squeeze into your dorm room, you’ll always be in need of another outlet.

Save yourself the trouble and be sure to pack up a surge protector like this one! I loved being able to turn all of my appliances on and off with the one little switch at the top of it, as well.

5. Mini Fridge

I know a mini fridge is a bigger expense when it comes to back-to-school buys (although this one is under $100) but take it from me… it is life changing to have one. Everyone jokes about the “Freshman Fifteen,” but there’s definitely an element of truth to it. It’s more difficult to stay healthy when you don’t have access to a kitchen!

My freshman year roomie Olivia and I hid one underneath our bed freshman year (see the importance of bed risers below) and loved having it for greek yogurts, fresh fruits and veggies, almond milk and all sorts of other things you wouldn’t find in a cafeteria. Worth it, trust me!

6. Shower Caddie

Even if you have the luxury of sharing a shower with only a couple of other rooms (which I know is often not the case) make sure you bring along a shower caddie. It keeps things organized, in the same place and convenient… plus, you won’t have to worry about using the wrong shampoo or (heaven forbid) razor. Plus, they’re super inexpensive! (This one is just $6!)

7. Brita Filter

The Brita my freshman year roommate and I shared was like a third roommate to us. We named her, joked about her and used her all the time. This style in particular fits inside a mini fridge, and really is so helpful in staying hydrated. There’s just something comforting about drinking from the Brita as opposed to the dorm faucet… know what I mean?

8. Sleep Mask

Even if you never used one in high school, I highly recommend bringing along a sleep mask. It’s rare that you’re ever on the same schedule as your roommate, and trust me… not having to worry about being woken up in the middle of what precious little sleep you’re lucky enough to get is a game changer.

This would also be a cute welcome present for your roomie, and that way you won’t have to worry when you need to turn the lights on at 7 am for your early-morning class!

9. Bed Risers

Like I mentioned above, bed risers are the best trick to making your room feel extra-cozy and creating (oh-so-valuable) extra storage space underneath. If you see the picture I shared above, both of our beds were on risers!

I’d recommend getting the highest ones you can find. (This set goes up to 8 inches.)Plus, you’ll get extra exercise by having to run and jump onto your bed every day! (That was legitimately me, haha!)

10. Shoe Rack

Instead of using your precious, limited closet space to hang a vertical shoe organizer, use a slender rack you can place at the bottom of your closet like this one! It’s easy to assemble and just $9. After a series of trial and error, I ended up using a shoe rack just like this freshman year and kept it for the remaining three years of college. Such a great space-saving solution!

There you have it, friends, my top 10 items to take to college with you! Whether you’re in college now or already graduating, I’d love to hear the items you used and loved to make your dorm room feel more like home! Don’t forget, you can check out more back-to-college inspiration here.

Love from Texas,

Kate
