decorating my apartment for christmas

While my apartment is a far cry from “winter wonderland,” I thought it would be fun to show you how I’ve decorated it this year. All of the decorations have been inexpensive items I’ve happened upon here and there, but I love the festive element they add to this space!

my apartment

gold mirror   //   white couch   //   white chair   //   gold gallery wall   //   pink rug   //   ginger jar art prints   //   acrylic dining room table   //   gold book shelf  (I spray painted it gold)  //   ginger jars   //   blue pillows (made by my mother)

my christmas decor

white reindeer   (michaels)   //   pine cone limbs   (target)   //   garland around bookcase   (target)   //   white village houses   (target)   //   gold tinsel   (target last year, similar linked)   //   white stockings   (target last year)   //   gold christmas tree figurine   (michaels)   //   red santa   (can’t remember)   //   gold lights around mirror   (target)   //   white pre-lit christmas tree   (last year, can’t remember)

I have to confess… one of my very favorite things about this whole “adulting” process has been getting to decorate my very own place for Christmas! I started out my senior year of college with a single garland, and now, year after year, I add a few more festive touches.

Last year was my first year to have a tree… and man does it change everything! And now that my apartment has a fireplace, things feel extra cozy. Let’s just say, Christmas decorations make everything so much better, and when it comes to living alone, I think they’re one of the better ways to keep from feeling lonely!

My dream is to one day have a big, real tree and a huge light display on my house (a girl can dream, right?) but until then, this cozy little Christmas apartment will do just fine. :) I hope you enjoy!

Love from Texas,

Kate

P.S. My mother and I are off to Vail, Colorado today! And I am giddy. We’ve never been before, so if you have any recommendations for food, activities, or beautiful spots we need to see, please let me know!

’tis the season // gift ideas for your guy

I’ve spent the past few weeks quizzing Andrew, my father, and doing some shopping of my own to come up with this year’s “Gift Ideas For Your Guy” guide, and I hope it helps with your guy list… whether it’s for a brother, boyfriend, dad, friend, etc!

click directly on a product to shop

Year after year, one of the most common requests I get around the holidays is for a guy’s gift guide! Isn’t it funny how us girls can become such pro’s at shopping, only to totally draw a blank when it comes to getting something for a guy in your life?

I’ve spent the past few weeks quizzing Andrew, my father, and doing some shopping of my own to come up with this year’s “Gift Ideas For Your Guy” guide, and I hope it helps with your guy list… whether it’s for a brother, boyfriend, dad, friend, etc!

The products you’ll find above are either ones that guys in my life own and love (like this dapper quilted vest, a favorite of my dad’s, and Andrew’s favorite t-shirt style), gifts I’ve given to guys in my life (like this spherical ice mold), gifts I’ve been given and love (like my can’t-live-without Tile tracker) or ideas I’ve looked into and genuinely think any guy would love (like this amazing waterproof, floatable, nearly indestructable speaker.)

Also, let me just throw this out there… if you’d also like a gift you will love, get him this fragrance. I’m obsessed with it!

And if you’re still looking for more ideas, check out these other guides I’ve put together in the past:

Guys Gift Guide 2017

Guys Gift Guide 2016

Guys Gift Guide 2015

I also thought I’d bring y’all 5 helpful tips for “How To Give The Perfect Guy Gift” that I shared a couple of years ago. If you’re stumped, check these out!

5 tips for giving the perfect guy gift

1. Keep a List

While this requires a little pre-planning, I’ve found that gifting a guy comes much easier when you already have a list of ideas personalized to him. No duh, Kate, but how to get this list? Always be on the lookout of ideas! If I hear my dad or boyfriend, for example, mention something they like, think is cool or want throughout the year (not just at Christmastime!) I discreetly make a note on my phone with as many details as I can gather. That way, when birthdays or holidays roll around, I can scroll through for inspiration! So much better than the “What do you want for Christmas?” answered by the common “Ummm…”

2. Give an Experience

Over time, I’ve found it’s often so much fun, and so much easier, to give an experience over than an item. (Because really, how many new sweaters does a guy really want?) Use this opportunity to get him tickets to something he loves like a sporting event or concert. Either gift him tickets for himself and a friend, or, if it’s for a boyfriend/husband, for the two of you! If you have couple friends you both love, coordinate with the other gal to plan a really fun double-date – girl’s treat!

3. Buy the Brand

If you’re low on time or are gifting a guy you don’t spend a ton of time with, choose a gift from brands he currently owns and uses. (If you don’t know, ask his mom or someone he’s close to!) I know that for most of the guys in my life, anything from Patagonia, Nike and Yeti is always a safe bet. The great thing about this option is you can tailor to your budget… a ball cap could be just as well-received as a higher-end item if it’s from a brand he loves!

4. Food

I usually steer way clear of gift-card giving, as it can sometimes comes across as impersonal, but it’s true what they say… the way to a guy’s heart, or good graces, is through his stomach! Get him a few gift cards to his favorite, most-frequented places (arrange them in a little basket) or, if he’s a foodie, to one really nice establishment he wouldn’t normally treat himself to. You can never go wrong with a steakhouse!

5. Include the Gift Receipt

If all else fails, include the gift receipt in your present! This gives him the option of choosing something he really wants if he’s an egg that’s particularly hard to crack. It takes the pressure off of you, and gets him closer to exactly what he wants!

This year, Andrew has asked for the Fitbit Charge 3… which made this process entirely too easy on me! So I got him a couple other fun items he’s not expecting as well. Let me know if you have any great guy gift ideas!

Kate

wedding wednesday no. 9 // 6 months until june!

SIX MONTHS, Y’ALL. To be quite honest, the wedding has felt so impossibly far away these past few months, but something about reaching the 6-ish month mark (If you remember, I won’t be sharing the exact date until we get married!) has me in a puddle of excitement. For some reason, reaching six months until our wedding month feels so real.

Andrew and I were in the middle of watching “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding” (clearly my idea) when we received a text from his cute mom.

“6 months until June!!!”

So for today’s Wedding Wednesday post, I thought I’d share a planning update with y’all! You can read my last one here. I’ve capitalized the items we’ve checked off since my last update!

✓ Church
✓ Date
✓ Photographer
✓ Reception Venue
✓ Band
✓ Hair & Makeup
✓ Honeymoon

✓ DRESS

Well HELLO huge update, am I right? Y’all… I cannot believe I found my dress! I will be sharing so many more details later, but let’s just say it took me so much longer than I anticipated to make a decision. No, you don’t understand. It took FOREVER. I think it’s a mix of being super picky and having so many options here in Dallas, but either way, it was quite the adventure and I can’t wait to spill the full story soon! I will share a fun secret for now… I’m meeting with the designer this Friday to finalize the details and get my dress ordered. Any guesses on what type of style I’ll be wearing?

✓ ATTIRE FOR GROOMSMEN

Unlike my dress hunt, deciding on attire for Andrew and his guys was such an easy decision! While Andrew hasn’t picked his exact ensemble yet, he’s planning on using Mister Tuxedo, a shop right here in Dallas, for him and his guys. Fun fact, this is actually where my father got his tux when he married my mom! :) I can’t wait to share more about this process… perhaps we should do a “tuxedo try-on” post featuring Andrew? Leave a comment if you feel this is a MUST like I do!

✓ BACHELORETTE PARTY

I’m not spilling the details yet, but let me just say I am already counting down the days until my bachelorette partyThe process of putting together and planning it has been a dream. Now,I know that technically the maid of honor is the one who plans the weekend, but my sister Steele is new to the wedding thing and asked if I would weigh in on (AKA help plan) the big details. I was actually so excited to say OF COURSE, because I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted right off the bat. We don’t have all of the details nailed down quite yet, but let’s just say, it’s going to be even better than I could have dreamed… a special team I adore may or may not be involved… :) That’s all I’ll say for now!

✓ FLORIST

Just like the process of finding my wedding dress taking so much longer than expected, the process of deciding on a florist was just as lengthy! I’ll say it again… there are so many incredible options here in Dallas that it can make actually deciding difficult. We met with so many incredible teams, but at the end of the day decided on the one who could deliver exactly what we were looking for within our budget. That was key for us, and I can’t wait to share more about this soon!

✓ ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

Andrew and I finally took our engagement portraits with our photographer John, and let me just say, it was literally one of the most fun evenings of my life. John sent us the full gallery last week, and I literally cried looking through them! I’m selecting all of my favorites to share with y’all here in the next couple of weeks, along with deciding on “the one” we’ll use for our save the date! There are so many that I’m wondering if y’all would be interested in dividing them into two separate posts? We photographed two different looks, so I’m thinking that breaking those into two posts would allow me to share way more with you without getting overwhelming. Let me know your thoughts!

✓ GUEST LIST

Perhaps the hardest task of wedding planning we’ve experienced thus far has been finalizing the guest list. We’re planning on a wedding of about 300 guests, and while that seemed so big initially, it was crazy how quickly those numbers dwindled down when we started putting pen to paper. I’ve literally stayed up at night fretting over hurt feelings, but we have finally come to an official list. Whew. I wouldn’t wish this process on anyone!

✓ PUTTING ENGAGEMENT PARTY DATES ON THE CALENDAR

This afternoon, I’m having my mother and future mother-in-law over to my apartment to finalize wedding shower dates! We’re expecting this to be really tricky to plan because of Andrew’s rotation schedule (he doesn’t get an official schedule until a couple days before he starts his monthly rotation) but I feel so lucky to have the two “mamas” on this that I do. They’re unstoppable! (And fun fact, they met and became friends while planning an engagement party for mutual friends before Andrew and I even got engaged!)

While I definitely feel relieved to have so much checked off of the list, there are still quite a few things that need to get done this month and by early January. The next tasks on my radar?

☐ Officially Ask Bridesmaids

Here’s the thing. Most, if not all, of my bridesmaids already know they’re in the wedding. We’ve either talked about it for years, or it’s naturally come up in recent conversation. I actually called a few of them to check on bachelorette party dates and had to stop myself in the middle and say “Wait, you know you’re a bridesmaid, right?” Between the holiday craziness and being a pretty unorganized person (I like to call it “creative tendencies”), I haven’t “officially” asked. Which I feel awful about! So, this month, I’m going to create a cute “bridesmaid proposal” to send to all of them! Although I’d love to do a big package, it might just be through a heartfelt letter. Those have been the most meaningful “bridesmaid proposals” I’ve ever received, and since time is of the essence, I know I can get them out efficiently! Thoughts?

☐ Register for Wedding Gifts

Let’s just say… Andrew and I have no idea where to begin. But this needs to get done, haha! Any tips on where and what you registered would be greatly appreciated! This is something we’re looking to do this month. (And Andrew is really thrilled about getting to use the little scanner gun. Like, reallyyy thrilled.)

☐ Order & Send Save the Dates

This one is pretty self-explanatory! We just need to select a photo, and the finalize where we’re going to have them made. But let me tell you… easier said than done!

☐ Choose Wedding Cakes

One wedding planning task I’m so excited to undertake… choosing our wedding cakes! And crazy enough, Andrew is excited about this one, too! :) We’ve received a lot of great recommendations from friends and wedding vendors about amazing bakers, but have yet to reach out and schedule appointments. If you have any Dallas wedding cake recommendations, please send them our way!

☐ Finalize Bridesmaid Dresses

Eek! I’m so excited! I’ve decided on my bridesmaid dresses, but haven’t told my girls yet. Once we get a few details finalized, we’ll hopefully get this done here in the next few weeks!

☐ Secure Hotel Block

While Andrew and I don’t predict having a ton of out of town guests since our families are both here in Dallas, we definitely want to secure a hotel block for those that are traveling from farther away!

☐ Reception Rentals

Now that the big details of our reception have been decided, I’m so excited to move into the true “design” process. Part of this, I’ve learned, is bringing in rentals (like chairs, stage fronts, etc) to really make the reception especially beautiful. If you’ve used any rental companies here in Dallas that you just loved, would you let me know? I haven’t even started on this!

It’s fun to look at all we’ve done, but I’ll be honest… it’s a bit overwhelming to look at what still needs to be checked off! I’m just reminding myself that it will all get taken care of, and to really enjoy the process… even if it’s crazy! :) After all, we have an incredible, talented and capable team already assembled and at the end of the day, this whole thing is really about the marriage, not the party!

Before I sign off, I wanted to let you know that if you’re also engaged, be sure to check out my Instagram later today! I’m posting details on a wedding-related giveaway that you don’t want to miss!

Love from Texas,

Kate

P.S. I am constantly getting requests for white dress recommendations, so here are a few new arrivals I’m loving!

‘Tis the season of all things cozy, and in that vein, I’m excited to show you a super-sudsy pullover I’ve been loving all fall long.

Friends, meet this wubby fleece pullover! I purchased this gorgeously soft sweatshirt for my trip to Estes Park, Colorado earlier this season and have been cozying up in it ever since.

You see, not only does it look soft from the outside, the actual lining is made of a silky-soft, stretchy material that feels like your favorite pair of sweatpants… in the form of a jacket! It is seriously one of the most comfortable leisure pieces I own, and that’s saying a lot.

This would make an incredible Christmas gift for any girl on your list… from pre-teen to mother! It’s currently 35% off, making it just under $50, and is in stock in 3 colors in all sizes! I ordered my usual size, a Small, for a perfect, oversized fit.

It’s true what they say, there’s no place like home for the holidays. And in this thing, you’ll never want to leave the house!

lights, camera…

memorable (and easy) christmas gift idea

Photos are some of the most precious and meaningful things I own, and when it comes to giving a gift that is thoughtful, personal and timeless, they’re my go-to. Turns out, on top of all of this, they are also incredibly affordable thanks to Walmart! Today, I’m so excited to be partnering with Walmart Photo in sharing how their prints make beautiful gifts for everyone on your list, and how they have turned iPhone images of my favorite day into pieces I’ll cherish forever!

PHOTOS   1-hour prints from Walmart (various sizes)   |   FRAME   clear acrylic frames   |   FRAME   gold frames   |   FRAME   square matted white frame

The favorite Christmas gifts I’ve ever been given? Those that I’ve kept for years after opening. A pair of gold earrings, a set of dinnerware for my first apartment, and, over the years, photos from my favorite people.

I have a photo from my sister and I in Seaside sitting on my living room coffee table, a snapshot of my parents and I in front of Notre Dame in Paris, and above my couch? A gallery of twelve of my favorite memories hanging in rows, just to name a few!

This Christmas, I have quite a bit to celebrate because for the first time ever, it involves celebrating with two families instead of one! The year of 2018 has been the most joy-filled and exciting year of my life all thanks to a perfect Sunday morning in September (and, I suppose, the guy who planned it :), and the day I got engaged was my happiest yet!

Let’s be real… I’d be lying if I said I didn’t flip through all of the photos on my phone from time to time. (And by “from time to time” I definitely do not mean daily. Who’d do that?!) So for Christmas this year, I wanted to finally get these photos off of my phone and into beautiful frames that can be enjoyed for years to come! And to make this happen, I took advantage of Walmart’s 1-hour prints to bring my favorite snapshots from this day to life.

If you don’t already, you’ll love how easy the process is of ordering photos through Walmart is! Simply upload your favorite photos, choose what dimension you’d like (did you know you can even get square photos printed in 1 hour?) and choose to pay either online or when you pick up.

Since the prices are so incredible (a 4×6 is $0.09, y’all) I was able to order a huge assortment of photos from our engagement in all different dimensions to mix and match into my favorite frames. Let me just tell you, they all came out beautifully! Plus, many of the sizes are available 1 hour after your order. Talk about convenience!

Speaking of frames, I also found a few gorgeous pieces in which to house the different photos. This acrylic frame (available in 4×6, 5×7 and 8×10) is timeless, minimal and looks beautiful in any setting. Since I simply love the look of a matted square image, this frame was a no-brainer. I also bought a couple of these classic gold frames for some larger shots!

I was thrilled with the end result. It’s amazing how the combination of a special memory and a lovely frame can create a memento you’ll never want to get rid of! And I’m so excited to gift many of the images you see above to my family and future in-laws.

I can’t wait to give my sister the picture we took right when she and my family surprised me for brunch following the proposal. I know she’ll love it! I also ordered and framed a large print of Andrew and his dad from after Andrew popped the question. His dad was so proud and excited… that photo gets me every time! (Can you find it above?)

But if I’m being honest, I’m also keeping more than a few of these for myself. Let me tell you, there’s something so liberating and beautiful about having these photos off of my iPhone and into beautiful frames around my apartment! I find myself pausing and smiling all too often.

With the lovely quality, low price-tag and incredibly convenient process of ordering through Walmart, I am so excited to have beautiful gifts for my in-laws this Christmas as well as special memories to fill my own apartment!

So if you’re looking for a meaningful (and easy) Christmas gift this season, or are simply tired of storing all of your photos on your phone, head to Walmart’s photo page to order your own. Trust me, the end result is a lot of joy and a whole lot of nostalgia.

Love from Texas,

Kate

Than you, Walmart, for sponsoring this post.
