DRESS white puff sleeve mini dress (also in black, wearing size US 2) | SHOES tan and black espadrilles (similar linked, gold and white available here, straw and black available here) | BAG belmont structured tote | EARRINGS rattan earrings (sold out, similar here)

Happy, happy Monday friends! Wow. It has been quite a while since I’ve brought a “typical” outfit post to Lonestar Southern. This was actually photographed about a week before things started getting crazy and for whatever reason, I’ve held on to the photos until today.

I think the reality is that the thought of heading outdoors to shoot fun spring looks, even right outside of our own back door like we did in this post, feels a bit odd. That’s why you’ve been seeing lots of collage posts and photos around the house lately, and I hope that’s ok! Hopefully, we’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming soon enough.

That thought, actually, brings me to what I wanted to briefly talk about today: the power of positive thinking, especially the middle of uncertain times. Obviously, this is not a new concept, and I’m certainly not trying to pen anything profound this morning. What I do want to do, however, is remind you, and hopefully encourage you, with something I lost track of a couple of weeks ago.

You may have heard me refer to the “off” week I had. I was in a funk non-stop, believing thoughts like “At this point, I should have things figured out!” and “We’ve been social distancing for weeks now, I need to have found a way to be as productive as I was beforehand.” I spent a solid week feeling like because we were a few weeks in, it was high time I had adjusted, adapted, and figured out how to keep things rolling as usual.

After a week of feeling miserable, I realized those narratives weren’t working. So last week, I decided to start Monday afresh and switch up my mental script. And here’s what I reminded myself of.

There is no timeline on finding a way to feel “normal” in this season.

No measure of productivity is ever going to bring me lasting contentment.

It’s worth focusing on and enjoying the rare blessings of this season rather than rushing through them to get back to “normal.”

I think I realized, maybe for the first time in my life, that I tie a lot of my self-identity and self-worth into how much work I can get down, how much I can create, how many blog posts I can put together in a week, and the list goes on.

I let go of that pressure last week, and it was the best week I’ve had in a while. And I intend to do the same this week.

So if you find yourself stressed out, overwhelmed, and beating yourself up because you can’t seem to “get back to normal,” know that you’re not alone. And even though everyone is trying to put on a normal, brave face and carry on as usual, everyone is feeling a level of this.

This week, let’s do our best and nothing more. Let’s be ok with trading in our usual level productivity for a new measure of rest. Let’s look to the One who always satisfies rather than our own strength to keep ourselves happy and fulfilled. Let’s switch our thinking from continual-pressure to continual-positivity.

In the middle of everything going on, I think that one shift will allow us to have a really great week, and then another one, and then at the end of all of this we’ll look back with gratitude for the rest we let ourselves sink into and the rare blessings we let ourselves enjoy.

For me, in particular, I’m going to be doing my best to continue to create colorful, fun, uplifting content. I’m going to be diligent and stay focused to the best of my ability. But I’m also going to enjoy another rare week off with Andrew. I’m going to embrace the extra time for long walks and deep conversations. And I’m going to be ok with being a little bit less productive than usual. What does it look like for you?

“The Lord is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.”

Exodus 15:2

Thank y’all for letting me get on my soapbox. :) Writing this out was really therapeutic for me, and although this is nothing profound, I think it’s a reminder we all need during this season!

Oh… and about the puff sleeves! Can we all just take a moment to be thankful that loose, flowy silhouettes are in this season? Give me all the easy, breezy dresses, like this $30 piece in today’s post (also comes in black!), and let us vow never to go back to bodycon. Deal?!

the happy list // no. 3

To close it out on a high note, I thought it was time for another Happy List! This little series has replaced my “Latest & Greatest” roundups lately, and it’s proven to be such a fun exercise in looking for the good and focusing on the positive. So, with that being said, here are a few things making me happy lately!

I may be losing track of every other day of the week, but Fridays will always be something I get excited about. In this somewhat structure-less season we find ourselves in, I seem to be loving this day even more. After all, it’s the mark of another week down, and hopefully, another week closer to the end of all of this!

For whatever reason, this week flew by. After feeling off the entire week before, it was such a blessing to get back into the swing of things. It’s pretty amazing what can happen when you make a mental decision to have a good week!

To close it out on a high note, I thought it was time for another Happy List! This little series has replaced my “Latest & Greatest” roundups lately, and it’s proven to be such a fun exercise in looking for the good and focusing on the positive. So, with that being said, here are a few things making me happy lately!

SHORTS (naturally loose fit, I’m wearing an XS) | SHIRT (sold out, available here in a dress) | BRACELETS (use code KATE20 for 20% off)

the happy list

  • Healthy pancakes! I have been making these non-stop, including for lunch today. Recipe: Throw one banana, two eggs, and a 1/2 cup of oatmeal into a blender and blend on high for about 20-25 seconds. Cook on a non-stick pan on medium heat for about 2-3 minutes per side. Top with your favorite things and enjoy it! Makes a perfect serving for one person.
  • Blue Bell Ice Cream lover? A new flavor has just been announced!
  • If you could use an extra bit of encouragement, this song has been on repeat this week and is powerful. (Here’s the YouTube link if you don’t have Spotify!)
  • Andrew ordered a Bocce Ball set for us, and we had the best time listening to music and playing it in our front lawn last weekend! Highly recommend if you’re looking for a new social-distancing activity.
  • Je m’appelle Kate, and I’ve started taking free French lessons on the Duolingo app and it’s so fun.
  • Flynn has officially conquered his fear of the stairs and now will climb both up and down on his own! We’ve been working on this for about a month and feel so proud. :)
  • I’ve found the perfect pair of shorts for this spring and summer! The have a fabulous, naturally loose fit (so don’t size up) and come in a wide array of gorgeous colors. Plus, they’re currently on sale!
  • New needlepoint project alert! This Topo Chico canvas got delivered the other day and I’m obsessed.
  • One of my favorite ladies, who I have been following for years, recently announced she’s going to blog full-time! Amy from AmyBelievesInPink is the embodiment of sunshine, and I am so excited for her new journey! She wrote a wonderful post about leaving Lilly Pulitzer (my dream job before blogging!) for this new season here!
  • Neiman Marcus shared the cutest video tutorial for their iconic chocolate chip cookies.
  • I’ve been listening to this playlist all week and have loved hearing that you’re enjoying it!
  • Have you heard of Addison Bay? The cutest workout line, and their new arrivals are adorable!
  • This weekend, I’m planning on making one of my childhood favorite desserts, “Strawberry Delight.” My grandmother used to make it when we’d go to the lake house, and I haven’t had it in years. Excited to recreate it! (I’m using rolled oats instead of walnuts and using 1.5x the amount of flour, brown sugar, butter and oatmeal.)

What’s been on your happy list lately? I’d love to know!

Signing off for this week and so excited for our favorite Thai takeout, a game or two of Ticket to Ride and a movie!

Kate

spicing up my makeup routine // a few sephora sale buys

Over the past few weeks, though, I’ve randomly been seeing so many great makeup routines and tutorials from accounts I follow. I’ve gradually started to create a mental list of products I might like to try out… and now that the Sephora sale is on, I decided to pull the trigger!

Don’t get me wrong, I really do love getting all dolled up from time to time. This social-distancing season, especially, I’m realizing how much more productive and confident I am throughout the day when I spend a few minutes adding some color to my face!

But I’ve always joked that I’m a “beauty novice.” When by some divine miracle I am introduced to a product that I can A) figure out how to use and B) end up enjoying, it’s hard to get me to deviate from it! Over the years, my routine has stayed pretty consistent, and I’m pretty comfortable with that.

Over the past few weeks, though, I’ve randomly been seeing so many great makeup routines and tutorials from accounts I follow. I’ve gradually started to create a mental list of products I might like to try out… and now that the Sephora sale is on, I decided to pull the trigger!

So, let me show you what I’ve just ordered! Keep in mind, I haven’t actually tried these yet so I can’t vouch for how they work for me. But they come highly recommended, and I’m excited to bring some fresh fun into my beauty routine! Plus, they’re on sale. Here are the details:

Sephora Spring Savings Event

ROUGE MEMBERS: 20% off (4/17-5/1)

VIB MEMBERS: 15% off (4/21-4/29)

INSIDER MEMBERS: 10% off (4/23-4/27)

new-to-me beauty products

CHARLOTTE TILBURY POWDER

This is the product I am most excited to try! My setting powder went missing a few months ago, and I’ve been going without ever since. Every single beauty guru I follow seems to recommend this, so I’m crossing my fingers! I got the shade “medium.”

SELF TANNING FACE DROPS

I always forget about the power of a good ol’ self-tan. I recently got back into the swing of it over the past few weeks, and it makes the biggest difference in my confidence as silly as that sounds! (I love the St. Tropez Classic Mousse.) Everyone seems to swear by these, though… you add these drops to your daily moisturizer for an easy, consistent dose of faux sunshine! I’m living on the wild side and trying out the shade “medium.”

A NEW PRIMER

While I’m usually a “less is more” kinda girl when it comes to makeup, I have seen firsthand the huge difference a great primer has. Trust me, it’s 100% worth it. I’ve been using (and loving) the Smashbox Photo Finish primer for years now, and just ran out of my current tube. Going to switch things up and try this one after seeing it in an Instagram Story… the bar is high, so I will report back on how I like it!

Fancy Schmancy Foundation

I’ve been using iT Cosmetics “Bye Bye Foundation” for a few months now, and really love it. But for some reason, I’ve been feeling a little bit bored with my routine and wanted to try something new! After watching a million YouTube reviews on this foundation, I decided to be dumb and buy it online without ever trying it in the shade 4.75. (Why Kate… why?!?!) But y’all, it looks amazing… buildable, lightweight, radiant finish… let’s hope it’s worth the big bucks!

New Concealer

This is the last “new” product I decided to buy. I’ve been using the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer for years now, and really love how dewy and non-cakey it is. It is definitely more of a “medium” coverage, though, and recently I’ve been flirting with the idea if trying full coverage. After seeing this Hourglass product in tons of tutorials, I’ve decided to give it a shot in the shade Silk.

There we have it! Buying makeup online without trying the products feels like a risky move… and in this current state of social distancing, it’s giving me a bit of a thrill! HA! (Pretty sure Flynn just looked at me with disdain.) But I guess there’s no time like the present (during which no one is seeing me in person) to try something new, right?

If you have a holy grail product you love, or a new one you’re going to try out, I’d love to know! To see my current makeup routine, click here.

j.crew new arrivals // 5 looks i’m loving

J.Crew just released an amazing new collection filled with classic cuts, vibrant colors, and plenty of vacation-ready pieces. It has me dreaming of fun outings and summer evenings when this is all behind us!

As a large part of my job is scouting out fun fashion finds on the internet, checking out new arrivals from my favorite retailers has become of my favorite “tasks.” I call it virtual window shopping, and even when I don’t buy a single thing (which is often) the online outing always manages to add a bit of fun to my day.

J.Crew just released an amazing new collection filled with classic cuts, vibrant colors, and plenty of vacation-ready pieces. It has me dreaming of fun outings and summer evenings when this is all behind us! I had so much fun creating a few looks around the new releases in January, and I hope this April edition transports you for a minute or two. Enjoy!

I live in all-white ensembles year-round, but especially love all of the fun you can have with them during spring and summer! Keep things classic with this effortless linen top and spice it up with a few fun accessories. I’m obsessed with the print of this headband!

I’m all about loungewear these days, but especially pieces I’ll continue to get use out of post-quarantine! This bright pink set just makes me smile and would be the coziest ensemble for a lazy evening at the beach. I actually own the jacket, and can’t wait to add the matching shorts to my wardrobe! And can we just talk about these striped sandals…?! So cute.

I’ve never been one to shy away from color, and this ensemble sure has a bunch of it! Orange and pink is one of my favorite color combinations, and I love how this headband pulls them together! And I’m a firm believer that no matter what you have on, gold accessories always take it next level.

P.S., I own these shorts in mint, and let me tell you… they are fabulous. (Seen on my Instagram here.) They have a perfect, relaxed fit that is flattering and classic, and so hard to come by these days. I usually size up in shorts so they aren’t tight, but you don’t need to in these! I wear an XS and they have a perfect, easy fit.

This dress is a bit of a splurge, but it sureee is a stunner! That pale pink, lilac-y hue is my absolute favorite shade this season. Pair it with all things neutral, like these adorable espadrille sneakers. I’m also ordering this belt stat to give some shape to the many waistless dresses I’m wearing lately!

Which ensemble would you like to break out first, and more importantly… to where? The lakehouse? Your favorite downtown dinner spot? I’m holding out hope that we’ll be there soon!

In the meantime, if you’re in the mood to shop, J.Crew is offering 30% off a huge selection of pieces (including many of the ones featured above!) with the code 5DAYS. If shopping isn’t something you’re doing right now, more power to you! The great news is J.Crew always seems to have an amazing sale going on, and I’m sure there will be more fabulous new arrivals in our future.

I am fluffy, adorable, sweet, spunky, have a fantastic singing voice, really great puppy breath and am really, really, really, really, really excited to for my first Q&A! (That stands for “questions and answers” by the way.)

My mom said I could only do one post but I’m going to call this “Five Questions with Flynn” and hopefully you will all love it as much as you love me and I can do more and more.

Thanks to everyone who gives me compliments and virtual pets, and to everyone who sent in questions for me to answer! Here are the five questions I, the fluffiest of Flynns, will answer today!

1. What does your daily quarantine routine consist of?

Busy, busy, busy! Sometimes I feel like my parents would be total losers if I wasn’t here to keep this house running like a well-oiled machine. Here’s a look at how I make it happen:

6:30 am // I don’t get it. Mom and Dad take so long to get out of bed. Don’t they know there is breakfast to be eaten, places to go potty on and people to sniff?! My current strategy is to sit up on my mom’s pillow, as close as possible to her face, right at 6:30am. (Picture below.) It gives me a great vantage point to just stare down at her. If she doesn’t startle awake immediately, I like to employ a well-placed paw-to-the-face. I keep this up in quick succession until she’s up. (Highly recommend this one, it’s incredibly effective!) If for whatever reason she’s being especially lazy, I move on and repeat the same routine with my Dad. I also have a really pretty morning song I sing for them that comes from a very guttural place in my chest.

7:00 am // Run outside to potty, come in to scarf down breakfast, then run back outside for a longer, more luxurious potty experience. That second potty is one of my favorite parts of the day, and if my mom doesn’t take me the second I finish eating, I remind her how important it is to me by taking my business to a discreet corner of the living room. That always gets her. :)

7:30 am // Nap number one. This is what I really don’t understand. It’s essential to get up right away so you can nap right away, right? My mom doesn’t go back to sleep like I do, and I think she’s seriously missing out.

8:30 am // This is always when my mom goes to the dark scary room I’m not allowed in and fights a big black monster she and Dad call “The Peloton.” I always wait right outside of the door in case she needs my help, but after about forty-five minutes she walks back in very sweaty and happy… which I guess means she won the fight. I get lots of yummy sweat licks from this.

9:00 am // Nap number two!

11:00 am // LUNCH TIME! Lunch time lunch time LUNCH TIME! I bet my mom would forget about lunch if it wasn’t for my prompt reminder at 10:58am each day. I have a lunch song I sing, much like my good morning song, and I think she loves it.

11:30 am // LIZARD HUNT! This is like the best part of the day. My mom and I go outside and chase all of the lizards and there are so many and it’s so fun! They are so afraid of me!

12:00 pm // Do you know how exhausting lizard hunting is? Nap number three.

3:00 pm // To keep my blood flowing and hone my lizard-hunting skills, I like to trot over to my toy box and select a specific toy to work with and show whose boss. Once I finish with a toy, I leave it out in the living room and select another. The most fun game is when mom puts the toys back in the box… I grab them all as fast as I can and scatter them back around the living room!

5:00 pm // DAD COMES HOME! Oh my gosh it’s the best I miss him so much during the day and then he walks in the door and I’m like “DAD DAD I MISSED YOU SO MUCH WANNA PLAY WANNA GO ON A WALK I WOULD LOVE TO JUMP ON YOU IF THAT’S OK AND THEN WE CAN HAVE DINNER!”

5:05 pm // Dinner!!!

5:30 pm // This is when I go on my evening lizard hunt and I show my dad how good I did with my mom and scare so many lizards! I’ll have you know that walking with two humans is a big responsibility and I like to stay right in between them to protect them.

6:30 pm // Nap number four, naturally! This is my pre-bedtime nap and I take it seriously. This is my favorite nap of all because I get to snuggle with my mom and dad when they sit on the couch!

10:30 pm // Bedtime! I like to switch things up every few weeks with my sleeping routine. I used to burrow under the covers and sleep down by my parents’ feet, but now I love laying on their pillows right next to their heads. Personal space is not a thing for me and I feel like that’s one of my best qualities.

As you can see, my day is crazy busy and honestly I think it’s all about time management. Be sure you’re getting your naps in. Be sure you’re getting fed exactly at 7am, 11am and 5pm. Be sure you’re as cute as me, and you’ll be fine!

2. How do you like your crate?

Oh, you mean my “clubhouse” as Mom and Dad like to call it to try to trick me into thinking it’s a fun, good place?

I HATE IT!

Ok you know what, at night it’s not that bad. It’s just like… my love language is physical touch so why on earth would my parents want to take that from me?! We’ve had this conversation multiple times when they’ve put me in it in the past. Luckily, my dad is AWESOME and talked my mom into letting me sleep in the big bed at night so now I really only have to go in my “clubhouse” when my mom leaves the house and then I make sure to tell all my neighbors that I’m trapped in it and to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET ME OUT!!! until mom comes home and saves me.

Have I mentioned I hate it?

3. How big will you be when you’re full grown?

Personally? Wouldn’t be surprised if I grow to be prettyyyyy big. Trust me… you can’t believe everything “breed standards” tell you. (Like “Miniature” Schnauzer? Psh, give me a break.) I’m thinking somewhere between 120/150 lbs but my mom seems to think I’m “nearly full grown.” I’LL SHOW HER!

4. What names do your parents call you?

Oh my goshhhhhhh they are so embarrassing.

Flynny-foo. Flynnstagram. Pickle. Flynnster. Flynnister. Schnoodle. Flynn-stice. Flinnibus. Stinky Schnauzer. Otter slayer. Flynn boy.

And finally… mom calls me “mi petit schnauzér” in what she thinks is a French accent. Like I said… embarrasssinggggg.

5. How would you describe your style?

Debonaire. But relaxed. Simple sophistication.

I’m definitely a “less is more” kinda guy, For your typical day-to-day look, I love a good au natural moment. (Like honestly who doesn’t am I right?!) But, it should be noted that I have a distinctive eye for luxury. It all started with a fabulous bow tie my aunt purchased for me. James Bond vibes in a major way especially given the contrast with my fluffy white chest.

Oh! And my parents brought me back a fabulous faux-fur linked kimono from Epcot that, let me tell you, is utter perfection. I love throwing it on for a cozy evening in when I’m wanting to wind down in true sophistication. A bit extra? Perhaps for someone who doesn’t enjoy true elegance. I keep telling my parents I need a pair of smoking slippers to really complete the look.

And not to get too carried away, but I love a good theme. I have a fabulous Christmas sweater with matching beanie that is merry to the max. (And ermergerd the puffy ball on top is so fun to chew!)

Thank you very very much for reading my first ever blog post! I would love to hear how your furry friends would answer the questions above. Please submit them in the comments below so we can be pen paw pals!

Love from my fluffy bed,

Flynn

33 fun finds under $40

For a few years now, I’ve come to enjoy “online window shopping” just as much as the real deal. Sometimes, if I’m being honest, even more so! Let’s be real… you can’t really window shop through the streets of Dallas in mismatched pajamas and your favorite coffee mug.

For a few years now, I’ve come to enjoy “online window shopping” just as much as the real deal. Sometimes, if I’m being honest, even more so! Let’s be real… you can’t really window shop through the streets of Dallas in mismatched pajamas and your favorite coffee mug.

Now that most of us are spending much more time at home, virtual “walks” through my favorite online shopping destinations have become a fun distraction. I’ve loved keeping tabs on styles that were meant for the kind of spring spent outdoors with friends… on walks, on the porch of favorite restaurants, and more. I can’t help but daydream about the future when that will be us again, and all the fabulous ensembles we’ll be in!

Today, I wanted to share a few fun pieces I recently came across in partnership with Walmart! Over the past year, they’ve stepped up their fashion game in a huge way, and I think you’ll see that through the collage below. Plus, everything is priced under $40, with the majority of pieces being under $20!

It’s a sensitive time for spending, so if you’re not in a place to make any purchases, let me remind you that you don’t need a thing! Let this simply serve as a happy dose of color and style. If you are wanting to stock up on a few new things, I hope these budget-friendly price points help you stretch your dollar just a bit more!

Either way, I hope you enjoy this roundup. You know the drill…
