latest & greatest vol. 35

Happy Friday, and happy first day of September, friends!

What a week… can we all agree? I must confess, it felt pretty silly putting together a roundup of cute new arrivals after watching everything the people of Houston and surrounding areas affected by Hurricane Harvey have been going through. I’ve felt heartbroken and helpless… I wish there was more I could do to help in very tangible ways, right there, right this moment.

Amidst that helpless feeling, though, how amazing has it been to watch people from all over the nation rally together to help? From the stories of men and women flocking to the city with personal boats and car-loads of provisions, to the people already in Houston who have opened their doors (check out the video below), to those farther away using whatever influence they have to spread information on donating and volunteering, the effort has blown. me. away. I’m reminded that we all have a part to play, and can use whatever we have right this moment to help.

One thing that has been weighing heavy on my heart is the long road ahead for the victims as individuals and families having to rebuild and start over. Many who lost everything did not have flood insurance. Think about that for a second… the logistics of returning to a home completely ruined by water. Where do you start? How do you clear all the water out? How do you assess what is ruined? How do you pay to replace everything? How do you pay to rebuild what can’t be salvaged? And where do you stay and how do you cook and how do you work in the meantime to continue going? It’s dizzying.

All that to say, I am praying that the Lord provides an opportunity for me to help even one family with the daunting process of starting over. I don’t know who, what on earth that will even look like, or how He could possibly use me, but I know God works in mysterious and big ways, and my hands are open. Will you join me in praying to be used to help with the months and years of recovery ahead? If I’ve seen anything this past week, it’s that there is so much good in this world. And in the midst of so much darkness, I know there is hope!

Before signing off, I wanted to point out that Yeti is donating 100% of YETI.com and YETI flagship store sales today, Friday the 1st, to relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey victims. That is absolutely amazing, so if you’re looking to do some good while getting some Christmas shopping done, head here and don’t delay! Orders must be placed by 11:59 pm tonight to qualify.

Precious friends, I treasure y’all. And to all of my Texas girls reading this in Houston, I love you. I think I can speak for the whole Lonestar Southern community in saying we are sending hugs and love and donations and all that we can your way. Please let us know if there’s anything specific you’re in need of!

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5

I believe this, y’all. With my whole heart. Because of Jesus, I am not overcome. We are not overcome. And the victims of Hurricane Harvey are not overcome. Not today, not ever.

Love from Texas,

Kate

  1. I love that video!! I’ve been watching the news every morning before work and heard about furniture stores opening their doors to victims and seeing that more in depth looked warmed my heart. The amount of help going to Harvey victims is the epitome of the American way – no one is alone in the time of tragedy.
