One item I’m so excited to wear on rotation this fall? The sweater dress! Cute, cozy and most importantly, comfortable, it’s one staple every southern girl needs in her closet!

Here’s the thing with sweater dresses, though. Throw one on in a fitting room and you may find yourself overwhelmed. I’ve tried on quite a few, and have found that they’re either wayyy too tight or, on the contrary, completely shapeless. Style them with a couple of these tips and tricks, however, and you may find they quickly become a favorite!

How to Style a Sweater Dress

ONE // Add a Belt

I don’t know about you, but body-con is not my go-to these days. (Girl needs some breathing room, ya feel?) So I’ve found the easiest way to add shape to an otherwise shapeless sweater dress silhouette is via a belt! For a classic, ladylike look, choose one that’s thin and simple. Looking to make a splash? Add a chunky one for a 70’s throwback

TWO // Add a Heel

The best way to turn “billowy” from potato sack to effortlessly chic? Add a few inches! That doesn’t mean you have to pull out the pumps. Simply opt for a boot (I’m obsessed with these) or bootie with a bit of a heel for a subtle lift!

THREE // Add Layers

While I’m usually one who aligns with the “less is more” theory, I’ve found that styling sweater dresses solo can get a bit… snooze-worthy. Use your sweater dress as a base layer, and add a few fall finds to give it character! A cute hat or blanket scarf always does the trick. (And a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte is always a great finishing touch.)

The sweater dress I’m wearing in this post is under $20, but is selling out quick! It’s still available in this hue. I’m rounding up a few similar styles below, though, if you’re wanting something more neutral!

One place I won’t be wearing this ensemble to? The fair this afternoon! My family and I are headed off, as per our annual tradition, to get our favorite Fletcher’s corny dogs and to view all the new car models. (Idk why… but we LOVE doing this haha.) The hot weather decided to rear it’s ugly head again this weekend, so it looks like denim shorts and a tee for me! Cold weather, come quick!

Love from Texas,

Kate

So cute! Love how a simple belt changed up the look of that dress entirely. Obsessed with the boots too!

  6. Such a good idea to add a belt! So many times I try on sweater dresses, and they have no shape! It’s a cute and easy way to keep your shape from drowning in fabric!
